AUSTIN – Colt McCoy's strengths have shaped the Texas offense as much as anything else, running backs coach Major Applewhite said Tuesday.
When asked if he felt the need to manufacture rushing yards, Applewhite pointed to McCoy.

"When we had Ricky Williams, we tried to run the ball 40 times a game because he was a great player," Applewhite said. "When you have a guy who makes decisions and is as accurate as Colt, to sit there and let him throw the ball 14 or 15 times a game the way some schools do would be foolish.
"You have to let your best players do what you do. For us, that's throwing the football."
Texas ranks 27th nationally in rushing offense (198 yards a game), but has yet to find a consistent running back.
The emphasis on the passing game is why Applewhite thinks Chris Ogbonnaya is a good fit as the starting tailback. A converted receiver, Ogbonnaya has shown a knack for catching the ball out of the backfield.
Turnover watch: Despite a strong pass rush and a rushing defense that allows 1.96 yards a carry, Texas ranks 96th in turnovers forced (seven) and has just two interceptions.
"I think sacks and turnovers are a lot alike," defensive coordinator Will Muschamp said. "You got to keep playing. You got to keep plugging. You're going to have a day where you pop a couple."
Mack on the Cotton Bowl: Mack Brown's impressions of the Cotton Bowl renovations have been limited to news accounts and the view from a window seat when his flight flew over Dallas. He is most happy with the increased seating to 92,000.
"There are a lot of really good fans who never get a chance to walk in that stadium," Brown said. "Now maybe there will be 46,000 from each school that gets a chance to watch it instead of 35,000."
He also hopes the coaches' locker room has been enlarged.
"You could get like sardines in there," he said.
