Phillips' former boss gets the boot
The Chargers canned Marty Schottenheimer, citing his "dysfunctional situation" with GM A.J. Smith.
Wade Phillips probably would have been San Diego's top candidate if he hadn't been hired by the Cowboys last week. Now I wonder whether the Cowboys could benefit by some of the Chargers assistants becoming available.

Cowboys' job search causes Chargers' job search
According to Dean Spanos, the president of the Chargers, one of the reasons San Diego fired Marty Schottenheimer was because he failed to keep his coaching staff around. One of those that left was defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, now the head coach of the Cowboys.
From the AP story: "That is absolutely unfair in my view," Schottenheimer told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "We had no control over two guys who became head coaches in this league.
