[Verdict]

I don't get whats not to like about this draft.

Unless I am being a complete homer....

But we added a pass rusher (which, we needed).

At some point, we are going to have to grow our own LT and maybe even RT depending on how contract negotiations with Columbo go (which we did with Free/Marten)

Playmaker on offense? Ok. We drafted a raw one in Stanback.

With Garrett instituting a new offense similar to the 90's Cowboys, we needed a FB that can catch. Deon Anderson can do that.

We drafted a K to develop.

We drafted a couple of CBs later on to try and groom.

And we got Cleveland's 1st rounder....

Not everyone will pan out, I know that....but we went after several things we needed....

I think that the brightest spot so far is Cleveland's 1st rounder. I get the impression that the future grade for this draft is going to be based upon the performance of Spencer and Stanback, and probably more so on Stanback. If he is a hit, it will be considered a very good draft.

Plus, drafting a kicker, based on his performance at the combine, was another interesting decision. Let's not even talk about the two cornerbacks picked in the late rounds.

I, for one, loved the two cornerbacks we got in the 7th round. I heard about Courtney Brown before and I think he will be a special player. I nver heard of Alan Ball, but from what I have read, he could be a solid addition. He might not make the final roster, but I do see him at least making the practice squad. I do see Brown pushing Reeves or Jones, most likely Jones, off the roster. I think both CBs have a good chance of making the roster and that doesn't happen very often for7th rounders. I am not saying they a re the next Newmans or Sanders, but I think they both will be solid additions if they make the cut.

I think this was a pretty solid draft year overall. Of course we didn't get any of the players I wanted (Ginn, Jr., Nelson, Merriweather, Bowe, Meachum, etc.), but we got a pass rusher that many feel is better than Ware was at that point in his career, O-linemen to groom, a WR project that is full of potential, a potential starting FB better than anything we have had in a long time, and depth at the CB position, not to mention the potiential top 10 pcik from Cleveland next year. That alone should make this draft at least a B.

As for the point from the blog entry, I certainly hope we aren't looking for a franchise QB after this season. I am not particularly crazy about any of the top prospects. I am particularly unimpressed with Henne. I would be very skeptical of Colt Brennan also.

Brohm is pretty good. Brennan is overrated. He puts up number because he throws 50 times a game. Henne is inconsistent as well for a first round grade. If we are looking at QB after this season , its going to be some drastic overhaulin...

But Brohm is no Quinn.....

I am not trying to be critical, but we got Spencer at the #26 pick. If teams thought he was as good as Merriman/Ware he wouldn't have gotten out of the top 10. I am hoping is "Ware/Merriman Good" if so, we got a hell of a bargain and have the steal of the draft plus a #1 next year from Cleveland.

I think the draft deserves a B because you do get the true potential for the number 1 overall pick out of a low first. Thats not good, it is amazing.

Now as to the specific picks:

Anthony Spencer wasn't rated higher because he probably needed to be a pure 3-4 OLB and he had no experience there. Most people feel he'll need a year to learn the position. He is more Terrell Suggs than Julius Peppers but its not like Dallas would be crying about adding a Suggs type player. He was probably a bit underrated and ultimately a very good value where drafted according to most.

James Maarten is big and a BC guy which has been a great sign. But he was not rated as an expected starter by most draftniks. He is either good and boring or a bust. OL are just not sexy and hurt draft grades.

Stanbeck was an athletic QB with some WR exposure. He was slash minus the big time college success. He was injured as well. A risky selection with high boom or bust possibility. Washington has been pretty bad and not many people have watched the guy play.

Doug Free is a guy most anaylsyts loved. He is about 20 pounds heavier than Maarten and ranked higher on many draftnik lists. Again, he seems like a good value but non-sexy pick.


So essentially what Dallas got hat was anywhere near sexy was the trade. After that it got solid football players that football guys will love. The grades may be low now but who cares? Its the grade 4 years from now that ultimately holds water.

It's even better than you think, because we got the potential first overall for the mere price of a third and fifth rounder. Cleveland gave us thir second rounder in addition to next year's first. We used that second and our own third and fifth to move back into the first round to select Spencer, which we were going to select with our 22nd pick had we not made the trade. That was one shrewd peice of wheelin' and dealin' by ol' Jerruh.
