FILE - In this Nov. 20, 2011, file photo, fireworks burst at FedEx Field before an NFL football game between the Washington Commanders and the Dallas Cowboys in Landover, Md.
At the risk of offending coaches, who focus only on upcoming opponents, let’s zoom past Sunday’s matchup against the visiting Colts and examine the time for the Washington Commanders game, the season finale.
Don’t make plans for that Sunday just yet. The schedule says the Cowboys are down to play at Washington at noon Dec. 28 on Fox.
But that’s just an educated guess NFL scheduler Howard Katz made in the spring. His goal is to have as many playoff-deciding games as possible on the season’s final day and broadcast them to the largest audience.
Final television scheduling for the final Sunday of the regular season depends on what goes on this weekend through the Monday night game that features AFC division leaders Denver and Cincinnati. The final word could come down as early as Sunday night or, more likely, as late as Tuesday morning.
If toothless Washington beats Philadelphia at 3:30 p.m. Saturday on NFL Network and the Cowboys beat Indianapolis at 3:25 p.m. Sunday on CBS, the Cowboys would clinch the NFC East. That would keep them in the noon slot on the final Sunday.
