Dallas Cowboys tackle Doug Free (68) pictured in the first quarter of a NFL football game at Soldier Field in Chicago, on Dec. 4, 2014.

Doug Free was inactive for Sunday’s 42-7 win over the Colts. The Cowboys’ starting right tackle, who has missed four games this season, is dealing with a stress fracture in his left ankle.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he expects Free to be limited during practice this week.

“We’re just going to have to look at him real closely this week,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM]. “We hope that when he gets out there, he’ll work against himself or do strengthening and conditioning things and then we’ll take a look at it right at the end of the week. I don’t have him, at this particular point, crossed off.”

Does Jones feel confident about having Free available for the playoffs?

“He’s got the kind of injury that he’s played with,” Jones said. “And, so this is a question of just how extreme, if anything, how extreme it is pain-wise. I think it’s something that we’re just going to have to see as we go. But I just want to remind everybody he’s played with this, and he’s played with this for several games.”

If Free is unable to play, Jermey Parnell will continue to start in his place.

Thanks for the info. To me let him in for a couple of series to shake off the rust, and then put Parnell back in.

I hope we treat this like a preseason game. Maybe one drive our one quarter from the starters.

So does this mean we are not resting starters?

They only have 9 offensive lineman on their 53 man roster, so even if they wanted to rest the starters someone has to play unless you feel like rolling with 4 lineman. People seem to forget this isn't preseason you can't rest everyone. And even if you could, given that you only have 46 active your starters would have be back ups and take some snaps anyway.

So this news doesn't really indicated if we are or are not resting anyone.

I hope we treat this like a preseason game.

See. Rest the key players as long as you can, but you still have to choose which to rest and which will have to have some play time.

I'd be alright with the team playing everyone but Murray and Romo. Murray needs to let that hand heal and rest those legs a bit for the home stretch. Romo needs to stay locked in his house and not come out for any reason until playoff time.

No reason to play him, let him get as close to 100% as possible.

There is no reason to play Free against the Skins. There's really no reason to start him at anytime unless he is 100%. It would be better to have Free available as the backup if not 100% than for him to get re-injured and then have Parnell get injured because you don't want Tony Hills playing RT.

Well, let him play if he, the docs and the trainers say it's ok. I rather see Parnell get the work for the experience and for evaluation. One or both are likely to be retained and we have enough data on Free.
