Cowboys WR Patrick Crayton will skip this week's voluntary sessions

Wide receiver Patrick Crayton will not attend this week's organized team activities, his agent Fred Lyles said. But he will attend some of the voluntary sessions in the future.

OTAs begin today. Crayton has been given permission to seek a trade since the Cowboys chose Dez Bryant in the first round of last month's draft.

OTAs are voluntary, but the June 11-13 minicamp is mandatory and players could be fined if they miss a day.

"In no way is Patrick sending a message to the Cowboys," said Lyles, who added he told the team Crayton's decision last week. "He will fulfill any and all obligations of his contract."

The Cowboys should stand firm on their ground and not give in to Crayton's demands/antics.

Make him play and if he doesn't fine him for each practice and game missed. He'll come around after that.

That being said, I will say this in Crayton's defense. He is getting a raw deal because of the jacked up way the Cowboys normally set the depth chart.

Crayton's a better WR than Roy Williams but Williams will be above him on the depth chart because of his contract and pedigree as a former 1st rounder.

If they were playing for the Patriots for an owner that doesn't meddle and a head coach with a backbone, Crayton would be starting over Williams.

Look at what Belichick did to Adalius Thomas. He was their high dollar free agent from a couple of years ago. He wasn't playing well so Belichick sat him and even made him inactive on some gamedays. We're talking about a guy who was the cream of the free agent crop not that long ago.

I doubt Jerry would allow Wade to do something like that with one of his highest paid players. And I doubt Wade would have the backbone to do something like that.

Crayton knows this. He said so himself last year after Miles Austin's emergence.

It took Belicheat half a season before he sat Thomas. If RW isn't performing well, it won't take Wade that long to remove him.

Unfortunately for Crayton, it won't be for him.

First person to acknowledge reality, or at the very least anything PC, his agents, or Jerry Jones has said on this topic going back to draft weekend wins a cookie.

I'm not so sure about that. What happened last season? There were plenty of opportunities Wade had to yank him out of the lineup to get his attention.

After week 1 RW wasn't very good. Sloppy routes, bad drops, you name it. Luckily Romo is the final decision maker as to who ultimately gets the ball.

There were a number of games where it looked to me like Romo froze RW out of the offense because he knew RW couldn't be trusted. And I applaud Romo for that. RW's playing time may have been guaranteed because of his salary but Romo made sure his sloppy play wasn't rewarded.

I like Wade. I just think it's not in his nature to be confrontational and bench a high paid player. Plus, I think he'd have to get Jerry's blessing to make such a move.

This disappoints me a bit. Unlike many on this board, I like Crayton. He is solid and normally very dependable. On top of that, he has seemingly overcome every obstacle that the Cowboys put in his way. Be it Roy Williams or a newly signed punt returner, Crayton has always come back and shown that he is an important part of this team.

I understand his disappointment in the current receiver situation here but he I think he needs to continue doing what he has always done; show up and play through it. Prove that he is not someone to get rid of easily nor easily replaced.

Hopefully, this is a one time thing and we will see him back in the remaining OTAs. He is not a "spectacular" player but he is extremely solid, year in and year out.

I hope we keep him.

I'm with you. I like the guy. I'm firmly against trading him.

If Dez Bryant is the WR that we all hope he is then Crayton should be no worse than the 3rd WR. Roy should be #4. But as I've been arguing, that won't happen because of the money Roy makes.

If RW halfasses the first few games, Bryant will get his playing time. Wade (and Red) may have been relunctant to remove RW for Crayton, but that won't occur with Dez.

Crayton's hope may be that if RW is replaced, he won't be able to handle the slot receiver (or being benched), opening the spot for PC.

When Roy Williams plays well he is a darn good receiver. Unfortunately he has underachieved for our team thus far. We all know he has to be in the starting group of receivers because of the investment in him based on his abilities. If Roy Williams doesn't perform at the onset of this season you very well will see a benching.

You couldn't simply do that last year considering we didn't have a back up No. 1 and No. 2 starter. Crayton is a very good No. 3 receiver and that's about it. I actually like Crayton, I think he is a savvy player most of the time and he does have good hands. But I have seen him lose his composure to the point it cost the team and also he did quit on a route in the post-seaon Giants game that could have gotten us further into the playoffs.

Tony throws to the receivers that are open and we have been operating under the philosophy of spreading the ball even when T.O. was here but particularly so when he left. That is between Garrett and Phillips. Jerry Jones does not dictate how many plays Roy Williams should get or send a message to Tony Romo in his helmet.

Your negative stereotypical comments about Jones and Phillips have been disproven since early 2009. This team is on the rise. I hope Crayton remains an integral part of the team but this is a player who temporarily got relieved of his duties because he turned the ball over last year.

Didnt Dallas give Crayton permission to seek a trade???

The fact that nobody has offered jack for Crayton should tell him something. I have no patience with Crayton and his "im not sending a message" crap. Hey Crayton, if you are not sending a message then why the hell are you skipping the OTAs???

Its not Dallas' fault that nobody will trade anything of significance for Crayton. There was a rumor going around at draft time that Dallas was wanting a 4th or a 5th for Crayton and nobody would take it.

So why the hell is Crayton pissed at Dallas because no team in the league will give up even a day 3 pick??? Maybe he should be pissed at the league since nobody thinks he is that great apparently.

If I am wrong, then why will nobody offer at least a 5th??? If Crayton is that great of a receiver, then why is nobody willing to trade jack for him???

The whining about" just tell me where I stand will" start next..(I think he learned it from Ellis. He should be grateful he has spot on this team ,even a number 5 receiver spot.

Go ahead and tell him he is close to standing out in the rain looking for a real job cause no one in the NFL wants him

"In no way is Patrick sending a message to the Cowboys," said Lyles, who added he told the team Crayton's decision last week. "He will fulfill any and all obligations of his contract."

I don't know about the Cowboys' brass, butI sure get the message Crayton is sending. If he wanted to be an integral part of the team, he would be here to fight for his position, and to also make the team a better team. His absence implies he no longer cares about the team, and those kind of people aren't even on my radar.

If I were looking for a trade I would be in every OTA and "voluntary" session I could get in on. The message I would want to send to a potential team is that I will work my tail off for you. The message Crayton is sending is that I will only work hard when it suits me to.

Dude, you want to come in to camp, for whatever team you will be playing for, in the best possible condition and as prepared as you can be. Skipping "voluntary" practices and workouts is the worst thing you can do right now, all you are doing is lowering your value, not increasing it.

I think Patrick Crayton spent way too much time hanging out with Terrell Owens. Not exactly the best role model for a young player.

how will we ever survive without his 4.7 speed in the slot?

This is a major worry for me.

Patrick needs to get in there. Our season could really hinge on the 4th wide receiver spot.
