OXNARD, Calif. — You watch Joseph Randle burst through a hole and sprint into the secondary here, and it makes you immediately aware of two things.

One is that this is training camp and the defense is only bumping into backs, not tackling them. So it makes it easier to run like DeMarco Murray.

The second is that Randle just looks faster than DeMarco Murray.

Now maybe that won’t matter at all because the fastest running backs are not necessarily the best. NFL defenses are blessed with far greater speed than the best college units, and backs better know how to set up their blocks and cut back against the grain to have any real success up here.

Randle certainly has some of that, as his 6.7 yards per carry average in 2014 indicates. But the question of whether the Cowboys are going to be OK without Murray won’t begin to be answered until the regular-season reviews start pouring in. The other thing to recognize is that maybe the one great question of this training camp is a little overrated.
