SAN DIEGO — The Cowboys’ defense may have been battered. But the team left Qualcomm Stadium relatively unscathed after their 27-7 loss to San Diego in the preseason opener.
Running back Ben Malena suffered a quadriceps strain. Meanwhile, defensive tackle Dartwan Bush and safety Ahmad Dixon left the game to be evaluated for possible concussions.
In total 25 Cowboys players did not take the field Thursday. Among the most notable who sat out were quarterback Tony Romo, tight end Jason Witten, receiver Dez Bryant, running back DeMarco Murray, cornerback Morris Claiborne (knee), linebacker Rolando McClain (hamstring/knee) running back Lance Dunbar, cornerback Orlando Scandrick, defensive tackle Henry Melton and defensive end George Selvie (groin).
Romo, Witten, Bryant Murray, Dunbar, Scandrick and Melton were healthy scratches. Cornerback Brandon Carr also didn’t play. He hasn’t been with the team since the start of training camp while tending to his ailing mother, Kathy, who died late last month after a long bout with breast cancer.
