IRVING - Dallas Cowboys running back Lance Dunbar could have surgery as early as this week to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, coach Jason Garrett said Monday.

A magnetic resonance imaging test Monday confirmed Dunbar's torn ACL. Dunbar was injured returning the opening kickoff of the second half Sunday night at New Orleans. Dunbar's left leg buckled underneath him and twisted as he fell to the ground. He will be placed on season-ending injured reserve.

The Cowboys waived defensive tackle Ken Bishop and linebacker Keith Smith on Monday, opening up two roster spots. When the club officially places Dunbar on IR, a third roster spot will be available.

The Cowboys need two roster spots to activate Pro Bowl defensive end Greg Hardy and middle linebacker Rolando McClain. The two players were suspended the first four games and will start practicing with the team Wednesday.
