Danny White: Dallas Cowboys are better off with Kyle Orton than Tony Romo vs. Philadelphia Eagles

SPORTSDAYDFW.COM

Published: 28 December 2013 07:01 PM

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Danny White recently joined Fox Sports Los Angeles to talk about the team. Here are some highlights.

On if the Cowboys can beat the Eagles with Kyle Orton:

“As crazy as this may sound, I think their chances of winning the game just got better. The reason I say that is I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen backup quarterbacks come in, and it raises everybody’s intensity, their level of concentration. Everybody knows no that their leader is not there with them, and it’ll do one of two things, they’ll either crater and go right in the tank or they’ll rise to the occasion and every guy will play just a little bit better. He’ll concentrate harder, make fewer little mistakes, and those are the things that win and lose big games. I’ve seen that happen over and over and over again. It may not be because of Kyle Orton that they win the game or because of his play but simply because everybody else will play just a little bit harder and raise their game to a higher level.”

There's probably some truth to this, but if we win, it will be spun as Orton doing something Romo couldn't.

IDK. about "because everybody else will play just a little bit harder and raise their game to a higher level.”
Id like to think that nobody has been holding back just because Romo has been playing.

I believe we will put up about 38 points, just not sure it will be enough to win though...

I think he's right to an extent. Look at how the whole mindset of the players changed when Kitna went in for Romo...Jason Garrett may have had a little to do with that, but I think that the players now realize that Romo isn't going to be able to bail them out...they're going to have to step up and make plays.

You're right, Danny. Only a matter of time before other teams start following the Cowboys' example. Have a win or go home game coming up? Start your backup! Seriously! It'll catch the other team off guard! They may act like they're going to have an easier go at it but everyone knows that teams fear the backup quarterback!

What I want to know is why so many people think the team will play harder for Orton? They weren't giving 100% with Romo back there? Anyone truly believe that?

This team has a chance with Orton. There aren't many teams, if any, that have a back up at the QB position as good as him. But anyone who truly believes that this team has a better chance with Orton behind center than with Romo is crazy. Not dumb, stupid or ignorant. Crazy.

Or high on the Devil's Lettuce.

I swear that Tony Romo is the most under appreciated starting QB in the league. Seriously.

I have been saying this for three days. It happens in all sports. Problem is, most teams cannot maintain the higher level. In football, generally the 2nd game is where they crash.

If that is truly the mentality of the players on this team no wonder they're stuck in mud going nowhere. I don't believe it is, though.

This fascination with kitna is crazy. He was terrible against jax and GB. Then he was lousy against Arizona before being injured.

And who stepped up under kitna? he never threw Austin the ball and forced it to Dez and witten, which was fine but I don't remember anyone stepping up to some new level or whatever.

It isn't about holding back. It is about finding another level. It has happened in the past. There have also been times when the team doesn't raise their play with the back up in the game.

I would never view the team as being better off without their starting QB especially when the QB is pretty darn good as Romo is. I would agree that it is possible for the team to come together and play well as a complete team to overcome the loss of the QB.

All you need to do is look at the game vs Indy that year.

You can't blame Kitna for the Jacksonville game or the Green Bay game. Players were phoning it in and Wade had lost the team by then. They felt like they had nothing to play for. Then Kitna started playing well and I think he commanded a certain level of respect from the players. There is a video somewhere that shows Kitna chewing out a player for not getting to the huddle quick enough. The guy was very well respected and I feel like the players looked at him as not only their QB, but a mentor as well; someone that they wanted to play for and someone that would hold them accountable if they weren't playing up to standards.

Yup. Time for Kyle Orton to channel his inner Trent Dilfer.

Trent Dilfer actually did not play all that great during the Ravens Superbowl run. The Ravens as a team played better, but Dilfer didn't produce much differently than Tony Banks. It is still one of the strangest outcomes of an NFL season I have seen. Of course they got to face a weak NY Giants team in the Superbowl that year. It was such a down year for all around good teams.

Didn't the Ravens give up about 13ppg? If that's correct then that'd make most offenses look good. Don't turn it over, run the ball decently and score 14 or better. Not that difficult.

I get what he.s saying. I think the star qb being out puts everyone else in panic mode and they think they have to step it up even more. I know theyre professionals and all and should do that every game, but they are human.
