Cant recall the last Cowboy player I've seen do less and be annointed more than Byron Jones. But I'll keep this comment in mind watching next season.
Exactly.
After all the whining by the mush-cookies in this forum about how "bad" Jones supposedly was this year.
WACO -- Darren Woodson, one of the headliners of Tuesday's Texas Sports Hall of Fame class, talks about the honor of making it; waiting on the Pro Football Hall of Fame; the greatness of the Jones boys, Jerry and Byron; bringing back DeMarcus Ware; and the time Michael Jackson made Kenny Gant cry.
On what making the Texas Sports Hall of Fame means: "This class I'm walking in with is special. I saw Eric Metcalf down the way and I still can't tackle him on the punt return. Nastia Liukin? My daughter wanted an autograph. What I think about is my family. There's no way I'm standing here without my mom and my sister and my brothers and all my great teammates and my coaches. Mike Zimmer's a big reason I'm here. Lovie Smith is a huge reason. I don't know if I'm playing football without Lovie Smith."
On Jerry Jones making the Pro Football Hall of Fame: "Who changed the game as far as the business side more than Jerry? He's the king of branding. Not only a great businessman, a great man on and off the field. Did we always win? No. Did we have some good times? Yes. Did we have some bad times? Yes. But at the same time, the man cared about us as individuals. His door was always open. As a businessman, he still helps me along the way. He's as instrumental in my life as anyone I've ever worked with. So kudos to Jerry. Love the man. Great owner, but an even greater man.
On his own shot at Pro Football Hall of Fame: "I've been asked all day if I feel deserving and I said, 'Absolutely.' I feel like I can play with any of those guys with the yellow jackets. At some point, as long as I'm patient, it'll happen. Hopefully I'm not in a wheelchair when I'm going in."
On whether Byron Jones should move to corner: "No. To me, he's the MVP of the defense. I know Sean Lee gets a lot of credit, but you're asking Byron Jones to play three different positions. He's playing the safety spot. When Orlando Scandrick goes down, he's coming in to the nickel. He's covering the slot receiver. Sometimes he's coming in to play corner. He covers the tight end on matchups. He does everything for that team. I can't tell you how hard that is. I know personally how hard that is, because I played the safety position, corner, slot, the linebacker as well. It's a hard transition to go from one hat to the next in the same game. You really have to be mentally checked in. Byron Jones is in his second year, and you're asking him to do a lot. To me he's the MVP of that defense.
"Great kid, wants to be better, asks a lot of questions about how he can get better. Tremendous athlete. I tell him, at some point you have to put some weight on. He's just one of the great athletes in the NFL, and he doesn't get a lot of credit for what he can do.
"The offenses spread you out, your safety has to cover. Look at the Super Bowl champs. What do they do? They get you in open spread situations, and if you can't cover, they're gonna find your weakest link."
On what the Cowboys need to improve: "It all starts up front. When we had our biggest success on the Cowboys, our front seven dominated. That's what they've got to get back to."
On bringing back DeMarcus Ware: "Love it. You don't have to play him on every down either. They can use him as a situational pass rusher. They need someone, when it's third-and-6 that's going to be a freak. We had Charles Haley as our freak. They need a freak on third down.
"If you're looking for a situational guy, look what Dwight Freeney did with the Atlanta Falcons. Not only was he a situational guy, he was helping Vic Beasley on the other side with the mental approach. That's where DeMarcus Ware could help you. Not only can he be an elite pass rusher, there's his experience. We had Greg Ellis trying to help the young guys. I think DeMarcus Ware could do the same. He did the same with Von Miller. He can do it here. I think they have some young guys who can get the job done, but they have to look out at that free agent market and see if they can bring in another guy."
Of the current crop of defensive ends, who has the most potential: "DeMarcus Lawrence. He needs more reps, and he has to be available. He has to mentally checked in, too."
Best Super Bowl memory: "You know what, it wasn't on the field. At the '92 Super Bowl. Watching Kenny Gant, the Shark, cry because he saw Michael Jackson walk through the tunnel. Before the biggest game of my life, in the Rose Bowl, about to walk out in front a hundred thousand fans, and we're crackin' on Kenny Gant for crying because he saw Michael Jackson. That just goes to show how dumb we were."

You played safety (as did I), tell me how hard it is to play zone for 12 seconds and keep players from finding an opening.Darren Woodson is my all time favorite Cowboy. His character and ability plus I played Safety in little league, Junior High, H.S. and 1 year of college. So I love that position...
So.... this is hard for me to say but.... I disagree with my hero... lol..
Byron Jones is NOT MVP of that Defense. They must be friends and Darren has to be touting his buddy to take some of the heat off of him.
Yes, what Byron does is hard to do, but that doesn't make him MVP if he is doing it poorly or averagely. Notice Woodson never said that he filled all those roles in a spectacular fashion? Because he didn't. That last play of our season, Rodgers' 30 yard pass, was HORRID!!!
To me, next season is boom or bust for Byron.
Twelve seconds is a stretch but that's a solid point regardless. You played safety (as did I), tell me how hard it is to play zone for 12 seconds and keep players from finding an opening.
He ain't as bad as people wish, he just ain't as good as most hope.
Seems pretty sold on Byron Jones.
Good to hear
He's a JAGAnnointed? It's mostly defense of him. There not many NFL defenders who avoid looking bad on occasion, and if the select few you can point to, most have a stellar cast alongside of them.
Byrons asked to do a lot, he usually does.
After reading Woody's opinions, my opinion is: Woody should shut up.
