Felix Jones won't return punts

The Cowboys experimented with Felix Jones returning punts this off-season.

That experiment has been put on hold.

Special teams coach Joe DeCamillis said that Patrick Crayton and Terence Newman will return punts when the Cowboys open the regular season in Tampa Bay. Jones will continue to field some punts in practice but won't be part of the game rotation.

"We've kind of ditched that a little bit because he's not comfortable catching them back there,'' DeCamillis said. "But as the season goes on, if he becomes more comfortable, we will. We're still going to work him there.''

Jones will be used to return kickoffs along with Miles Austin.

Good, if he's not comfortable doing it, I don't want him back there.

yep takes time, something i heard that was strange though from a reliable source; on the juggs machine that shoots the football out for punt returns, felix jones wasnt working on that, but newman, crayton and reid were.

seems like to me if you wanted him returning punts you would have felix working on the juggs machine too, but hey, im not a coach, i dont know what is going on in practice, etc, just a monday morning fan qb

bet, hostile will get a kick out of that remark;

Has Ogletree "auditioned" for this job? He appears to be as fast as Crayton, with similarly good hands.

This is what I want to know. I'd like to see Ogletree given a shot at it.

DeCamillis Feels Good About Returners
Posted by rphillips at 9/2/2009 11:21 AM CDT on truebluefanclub.com

Three games into the preseason, Cowboys special teams coach Joe DeCamillis likes what he has in the return game.

On kickoff returns, it's Felix Jones, Miles Austin and possibly Isaiah Stanback. On punt returns, it's Patrick Crayton and Terence Newman, depending on field position.

Jones' speed would be an asset on punt returns as well, but DeCamillis is unsure whether he'll use him in a game anytime soon. Jones will continue getting practice reps there, however.

"We've kind of ditched that a little bit just because he's not comfortable catching them back there," DeCamillis said. "But as the season goes on, if he starts becoming more comfortable, we will."

I wonder if he did it in College?

You would think a guy with his build/attributes would be good at this.

Ogletree is not an instinctive runner, many scouts doubted he could excel as a punt returner b/c his 4.3 speed is more straight line-ish.

He did not return punts in college and that was a HUGE weakness for the Hogs. It ultimately cost us the SEC Championship game against Florida when Reggie Fish fielded a punt at the 1 yard line and then fumbled. Most of that season we had our fullback back there just fair catching them.

Nutt tried over and over again to get DMac or Felix to return punts but neither of them could field them cleanly. It was such a problem that if he was even remotely passable as a punt returner, they would have had him do it but he couldn't.

Sorry. I shouldn't have quoted your post. I was more replying to the original blog entry and the overall thread. This is about the 50th time I've seen someone ask about Felix returning punts. It's just never going to happen and I can't understand why it keeps getting brought up.

Because he's practicing so that he can return them at some point.
