Cowboys officials have been informed that running back DeMarco Murray will fly to Philadelphia Thursday to meet with the Eagles, leaving his return to the club in serious doubt.
This unexpected twist came after Murray placed a call to Philadelphia coach Chip Kelly to solicit interest. A source said the Cowboys were informed of Murray’s intent to visit the Eagles late Wednesday evening.
Murray led the NFL in rushing and set a single-season franchise record with 1,845 yards in 2014. Head coach Jason Garrett said Murray was as responsible as any individual for establishing the mindset that allowed the team to break free from the shackles of 8-8 in each of the previous three seasons.
Murray was allowed to hit the free agent market because he’s convinced his value is greater than what the Cowboys are willing to pay. The club had no intention of negotiating against themselves.
That no longer appears to be the case. Philadelphia’s interest has escalated to the point where Murray now has leverage.
Oakland, and to a lesser degree Jacksonville, were also in contact with Murray’s representatives throughout the day. But his trip to Philadelphia establishes the Eagles as the frontrunner for his services.
It’s unclear how much Philadelphia will be willing to pay since it signed Ryan Mathews to a three-year, $11.5 million contract earlier in the day and also has Darren Sproles on the roster. But if the Cowboys don’t want to lose Murray to a division rival, it’s clear they must exceed their previous offers.
