"I don't think I'm a risk-taker, but I would say I'm an educated gambler," Fangio told the Charlotte Observer in 1996. "I want to know what the risks are and what the rewards are before I do something. I need to be convinced the rewards are high and the risk is worth taking."

Many times Fangio has resorted to unconventional strategies. During a 50-play stretch in a 1995 game against the Indianapolis Colts, he ordered the Panthers to blitz 48 times. Carolina eventually won, 13-10, and recorded seven sacks.

But Fangio's willingness to push the envelope hasn't always been well-received. In his final year as defensive coordinator for the Colts in 2001, Indianapolis allowed more points than any other team in the NFL. Colts general manager Bill Polian pinned the blame on Fangio, whose schemes, he said, were too complex for a team composed of players with little experience.

We don't need complex schemes. We need to learn a system and learn it well, and basically line up and beat the guys in front of us, something we haven't been doing aside from DeMarcus Ware when he isn't held or triple teamed.

I can't get too excited about Fangio. Not because I doubt his abilities. Rather because I find it hard to believe he won't follow Harbaugh to San Francisco. If he chooses Garrett over Harbaugh I would find that amazing.

Are you really counting Jason out? What do you think of Fangio if you thought he was a real possibility?

It's puzzling that Harbaugh hasn't already got him though. Add that he came and interviewed means to me we could have him if Jason wants him.

I'm not sold on him completely because I'm really not impressed with his track record. Although I've never been impressed with Caper's track record either up until his work with Green Bay. But comparing him to the names already out there he probably is the best bet. I think the Steeler's system is the best version of the 3-4 overall.

I would like to see the team get away from Wade Phillips' scheme. It's time to move on. Phillips had some success for sure with the defense. There were games were they dominated and had dominant stretches.

However, Phillips didn't adjust his schemes when they were not working this year. Yes, there were personnel issues up front and in the secondary, but Phillips' blitz even more approach didn't work. It made things much worse. He simply had no answer. Garrett and Pasqualoni made the necessary changes to actually get turn overs (especially interceptions) and stop the 45-7 blow outs.

I want a Dom Capers type of scheme. I want zone blitzes and over loads and an effective three and four man rush. I want to see those interceptions keep coming.

The Giants figured out Philips in 2009. When Phillips was gone, Dallas beat them again.

The players never quit on defense; they simply lost confidence in what their defensive coordinator was doing. Phillips couldn't adjust his defense when it wasn't working. He didn't protect his secondary; he just kept rushing and blitzing more people due to 4 and 5 man rushes not working. Phillips had no answer for the drop off in pressure up front, and his safeties were erratic on the back end.

Also, I think Wade Phillips, the head coach, lost his entire team for various reasons. That is obvious.

.....unless Harbaugh OFFENDED him at Stanford, you'd think he'd follow him to the 49ers. JJ could outbid him but....we all really want Nolan anyway: most importantly Red wants him. Kinda hoping he can pull a rabbit out of a hat here.;)

I hate to say it but I agree. Jenkins is a tight the line, in your face corner. He's going to struggle in zone.

I agree with this. I am a fan of Fangio but I think he will end up in San Francisco also.

your corner can man up in a zone blitz, like in a cover 1. Zone blitz doesn't mean everyone is playing zone.

Fangio is also a candidate for the Stanford HC job.

complex and dallas players dont mix :)

How many times this past decade have we seen players confused on defense...

Despite some fan's reactions, I don't think our players are any smarter or not than the rest of the league. We need better coaching. The players have proven to be pretty good in the past. Not all mind you still are but....

Wade had to go back to his base defense because his advanced schemes were to much for our players to execute.

Since I know someone is going to want proof, you will have to go back and watch Bradie James and Wade's PC's from 2009 to find it.
