The season is still months away. But after the Cowboys went through organized team activities, a picture is starting to develop of a team that finished 12-4 and advanced to the divisional round of the playoffs in 2014.
As summer approaches, several interesting storylines have surfaced that bear watching as the Cowboys conduct the final three offseason practices during the mandatory veteran minicamp. Here is a look at the most important storylines:
Finding a No. 1 running back

At Valley Ranch, the free-agent defection of DeMarco Murray to the Philadelphia Eagles continues to reverberate months later. Dallas has yet to figure out how it is going to replace the production of the NFL’s reigning rushing champion or who will fill the enormous void left by Murray.
The leading candidates are Joseph Randle, Darren McFadden and Ryan Williams. But since organized team activities began last month, the Cowboys have made it clear they’re open to bringing in more competition. Last week, they cut Synjyn Days and signed Baylor-ex Lache Seastrunk.
“I still feel like we’re going to find somebody that’s going to have not the majority of our carries, but a good bulk of our carries,” offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said. “I think before it’s all said and done, that person will rise to the top. What’s interesting and exciting is that we’re going to find out.”
But the process of determining Murray’s successor, which really won’t begin until training camp, has been disrupted after Williams and McFadden were slowed by injuries during organized team activities. Williams has been hampered by a swollen knee and McFadden by a strained hamstring.
“It’s definitely frustrating,” McFadden said. “You want to always be out there taking plays, getting reps.”
