Terence Newman signed a six-year, $50.2 million contract this off-season and hasn't been able to earn any of it. He's been busy trying to rehab a torn groin/sports hernia.
Newman never felt right after injuring the groin the first week of training camp. He played a few games after sitting out the season opener and was exposed against the Commanders, giving up two touchdowns and getting burned on a deep ball to Santana Moss.
Newman gets a chance to make up for missed time next week in Washington, when he's expected to start. He feels like he should have been recovered a long time ago.
Newman said he aggravated the injury while trying to get ready for the season opener against Cleveland. It was thought at the time that he tore scar issue, but he ended up needing surgery.
"It's real frustrating, especially because like having to take time and knowing that I could've had something done earlier in the season and could've been playing weeks ago," Newman said today. "It's frustrating in that part and me trying to go ahead and play on it and go with it and hopefully let it take its course. Now, knowing [what] I had, it kinda sucks that I could've had it fixed and could've been playing."
Newman isn't ready to declare himself 100 percent. But he says he feels "pretty good" and doesn't anticipate any further setbacks.
"The difference in this and the last few months is that it was torn and I tried to play through it," Newman said. "But now it's fixed, so it's a completely different situation."
