OXNARD, Calif. — The Cowboys’ offseason additions in their secondary were a big hint that changes were coming.

The Cowboys used their first-round pick on cornerback Byron Jones and signed free-agent cornerback Corey White. Jones and White bring versatility, with both able to also play safety.

Secondary coach Jerome Henderson said adding Jones and White was part of an offseason plan for the Cowboys to use more dime defensive packages to get six defensive backs on the field at the same time.

“Absolutely we’d like to do that,” Henderson said.

The Cowboys believe that adding more speed and coverage abilities during passing downs will benefit a defense that finished 26th in the league against the pass in 2014.

Random but I still can't get over how explosive Jones was at the combine.

World record broad jump and 44 1/2 inch vertical. Crazy.

Byron Jones will be seeing plenty of action in the dime defense this year -- bank on it. He'll be ideal in that setup.

With both Jones and Whites versatility, we should see some interesting defensive formations. Hopefully confuses coverages, maybe some nice blitzes or fake blitzes causes some interceptions.

The funny thing is, I think our best 6 DBs are all CBs.

1. Scandrick 2. Carr. 3. Jones 4. Claiborne 5. Patmon 6. White

I like is, especially when you see what Chipper is doing in Philly, spreading teams out, etc.

The Cowboys’ schedule this season certainly dictates the use of more dime. Dallas will face many of the NFL’s best quarterbacks (Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, Eli Manning and Matt Ryan) and some of the league’s most athletic tight ends (Rob Gronkowski, Jimmy Graham, Zach Ertz and Greg Olsen).

“The league is going in that direction,” Church said. “The running game is still there, but as far as the packages are going it’s a passing league. You’re going to have to have more coverage guys out there than you are going to have to have tackling guys out there. The guys we have out there can cover and tackle. I feel pretty good with it.”

Exactly why I'm on record saying we go CB very early again next April.

I'm okay with the new additions to the secondary. I wasn't happy when Jones was selected because I wanted a DT but I'm reading solid things about him and his measurables are nice. Hopefully I will be eating crow.

However, pass rush is still the key.

Look I'm all for playing "dime" but those 6 guy's out there, better frickin be ready to tackle.

Simple as that

That's the real key. Getting more db's on the field is ideal in today's nfl, but you have to still stop the run . That means the dline and lb's have to do a very good job against the run and the db's have to tackle well and read the play well

Hopefully the Cowboys pass rush will make him think twice about leaving his QB with minimal pass protection.
