Do you think Tony Dungy will retire in the off-season?
11:37 Rick Gosselin: Welcome to the playoff chat. I saw the two NFC games last weekend and I'll see the two AFC games this weekend... Now to your questions.
I think Dungy is probably leaning toward retirement. He stayed in coaching this season with an agreement from Colts owner Jim Irtsay that he could fly back home to Tampa, Fla., to see his son Eric play high school football. He'd leave Indianapolis on Friday afternoons after practice, fly to Tampa on Irsay's private jet, watch the game and then fly back to Indianapolis Friday night, arriving early Saturday morning. He was back at practice Saturday morning -- so it never interfered with his life as an NFL head coach. But I think Dungy got such a kick out of watching his son play football - his team won the state title in Florida -- I could see him walking away from the Colts and focusing all of his attention on being a husband and father. His son Eric will be a senior this season and is likely a major-college prospect. He'll want to be hands on for the recruitment process. Dungy doesn't need the NFL. He's as well-rounded a person as I've ever met in coaching. When he walks away, I doubt you'll see him sitting in a TV studio the following season or returning to coaching two seasons down the road. But I do know the Colts finished the season unfufilled with that loss to the Chargers. It's probably a coin toss what he does. He's going to let the Colts know next week.

Should the Cowboys have even bothered acquiring Pacman Jones?
11:41 Rick Gosselin: I would never have signed Pacman. I wouldn't have signed Terrell Owens, either. I believe you win with character in this league. It's a team game. The best 53-player team wins -- not the best 53 players. When you invite problems into your lockerroom, you get problems in your lockerroom. I found it interesting that when the Giants subtracted Tiki Barber and Jeremy Shockey from the mix in 2007 they went on to win a championship. They were replaced by lesser players in the lineup -- but there was less consternation in the lockerroom without them. Every snap Pacman played in 2008 was a snap Mike Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick did not get to play. They are the future at cornerback. I would have made an investment in my future.

Who do you like in the Giants-Eagles game?
11:45 Rick Gosselin: The Eagles have never been able to solve Plaxico Burress. In the seven games he played against the Eagles since signing with the Giants in free agency, Burress posted four 100-yard games and scored touchdowns in five of those contests. He scored a 17-yard touchdown against the Eagles in a New York victory last November. Plaxico Burress was the reason the Eagles went out and signed Pro Bowl cornerback Asante Samuel in free agency. But when Burress ran into problems off the field in December and was suspended, the Giants became a lesser team. Not having to deal with Burress in their NFC East rematch in December, the Eagles upset the Giants at the Meadowlands. The Giants are the better team -- but the Eagles are the hotter team. I could see the Eagles replicating the Giants feat of a year ago and going to the Super Bowl as a wild card.

Can Romo be "the guy" for the Cowboys? I am having my doubts.
11:51 Rick Gosselin: Romo is already "the guy." I remember in his first month on the job when he was dazzling us and everyone wanted to anoint him as the next franchise quarterback -- a worthy successor to Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman. I asked then -- "What if he turns out to be Danny White? " Is that good enough? Danny White was a great quarterback, a Pro Bowl-caliber quarterback. But he didn't win a Super Bowl, so fans of a franchise that have been spoiled by Lombardi Trophies have looked down on him. If Romo becomes the next Danny White, I would applaud him. It takes more than a great quarterback to win Super Bowls. Staubach had Drew Pearson and Tony Dorsett. Aikman had Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin. When the Cowboys get another Hall of Fame running back and Hall of Fame receiver to play with Romo, maybe be can be a Hall of Famer, too. I do think he has to be coached to a point where he takes fewer chances and turns the ball over less. Peyton Manning did it and became a championship quarterback. I think Romo's best days are still ahead of him. Appreciate what you have, Dallas. Romo is one of the best 6-8 quarterbacks in the NFL.

With Adam Jones gone, do you see the Cowboys dipping into the free agent CB market?
11:54 Rick Gosselin: In Terance Newman, Orlando Scandrick and Mike Jenkins, the Cowboys already have a talented three-deep at corner that should carry this franchise for the next 3-4 years. Trust your youth. Play them. Develop them. You know what you have with these guys. In free agency, you're going to spend a lot of money, probably a ridiculous amount, for a player you may think you know but don't. You don't know his work habits. You don't know how he fits in your lockerroom. If I was going to add a fourth cornerback, I'd do it through the draft. In my mind, the first three guys are already in place. Don't overpay for a fourth. There are far more busts in free agency than hits.

Do you think the health of Ben Roethlisberger is a concern for the Steelers? He has taken a beating this season.
11:59 Rick Gosselin: I think it's a big concern. Huge concern. Injuries have reduced this offensive line to the worst blocking front Pittsburgh has fielded in the last 10 years. So the Steelers are no longer the dominant running team they have been in the past. That's putting an awful lot on the shoulders of Roethlisberger. But his shoulders are broad enough to handle it -- if the Steelers can find a way to protect him. They can't let him get beaten up like they did a few weeks back against Tennessee. I think you'll see an offensive gameplan structured on shorter passes against Baltimore. Get the ball out of the hands of Roethlisberger and into those of Santonio Holmes, Hines Ward and Heath Miller. He can't continue to take the shots he has been taking. I'd tell my offensive coordinator we're going to focus on a maximum protection package for Roethlisberger this week and all proceeding weeks the Steelers are alive in the playoffs. Defense and quarterbacking have always gone a long way in the post-season. The Steelers already have the defense. The focus should be on keeping Roethlisberger upright and on the field. If they can do that, they can return to the Super Bowl.

Does the wildcard win buy Andy & Donovan another season together?????
12:00 Rick Gosselin: Reid and McNabb have combined to win more games in Philadelphia than any NFC team this decade. They have taken the Eagles to four NFC title games and a Super Bowl. I'd give them the benefit of doubt. They know how to win and they know how to win together. Come September of 2009, I think you'll see Reid on the sidelines and McNabb taking the snaps in Philadelphia.

Do the Cardinals need a "perfect storm" to beat the Panthers or do they line up against them well enough?
12:05 Rick Gosselin: If the perfect storm entails Anquan Boldin lining up against the Panthers, then yes, the Cardinals will need a perfect storm. These two teams played in Charlotte in October and Kurt Warner passed for 381 yards and two touchdowns in a thrilling game won by the Panthers, 27-23. Boldin caught both TD passes. If Boldin isn't on the field because of his hamstring injury or isn't 100 percent, the Panthers will stack the defense to stop Larry Fitzgerald and Arizona's chances of winning will greatly diminish. Single coverage on both Fitzgerald and Boldin would give the Cardinals a chance. Coach Ken Whisenhunt also must convince the Cardinals they are still in Phoenix. They went 0-5 in the Eastern time zone this season and have lost 10 games in a row back East dating to 2004. This team does not travel well.

Please speak very loudly for the induction of Bob Hayes into the Hall of Fame.
12:09 Rick Gosselin: I shouldn't have to. His statistics speak pretty loudly on their own -- an NFL record one touchdown every 5.2 catches. Lynn Swann is next at one every 6.6. Jerry Rice one every 7.8 and Cris Carter one every 8.4. Hayes also has a 20-yard career average. You can almost count the wide receivers who did that on one hand. Maybe the voters will listen to his stats this time. Hayes belongs in Canton. I feel good about his chances this time around. It isn't often the seniors committee brings back a candidate a second time. That's how strongly the committee feels about Hayes. That's how strongly I feel about Hayes.
12:10 [Comment From draft]
The 2008 draft provided some very good players. Does Ciskowski get the credit for that? What positions do you think the Cowboys focus on on day one of the draft?
12:12 Rick Gosselin: I always credit the guy who puts up the draft board. That's Ciskowski. The personnel directors/talent evaluators spend 12 months of the year doing the leg work, figuring out who can and can't play. The good GM follows the draft board. He plays the cards he's dealt. Jerry Jones followed the draft board in 2008. Ciskowski dealt him a good hand.

Who do you like - Ravens or Titans?
12:13 Rick Gosselin: Just like the NFC game, one team is better (Tennessee) but the other is hotter (Baltimore).I like the hot teams. If Joe Flacco can avoid playing like a rookie against a very good defense, I think the Ravens can pull the upset.
12:13 [Comment From Eric]
Is the Baltimore Ravens defense really that good and can their defense carry them for a long run in the playoffs?
12:16 Rick Gosselin: The front seven is that good. I think if you can isolate their corners you can make some plays on the Ravens. Remember, two starters in the secondary are on injured reserve -- cornerback Chris McAllister and safety Dawan Landry. If those two were on the field, the NFL's No. 2 defense would be even more formidable. The 1985 Bears and 1986 Giants won a Super Bowl with a great front sevens and average secondaries. The Ravens can go as far as their front seven wants to take them.
12:17 [Comment From Matt]
If healthy - and motivated - is UT's Roy Williams capable of being a number one receiver in this league?
12:19 Rick Gosselin: He needs to tighten up his routes and understand how important every play is in a football game. If he does that, he can be not only a No. 1 receiver on the Cowboys but one of the elite receivers in the game. This is an immensely talented player. The Cowboys need to find the spark that ignites him to play to his potential. A Super Bowl championship could be at stake.
12:20 [Comment From Overrated Players]
Sean Payton became a star after leaving Dallas. Tony Sparano had a great debut in Miami. Todd Haley, run off by TO in Dallas, has been successful as Arizona's off coordinator. Is it really Jason Garrett's fault or is it time for some of the players to look in the mirror?
12:24 Rick Gosselin: When there's no chemistry in a lockerroom, it's easy to blame the coaches. Underachievement cannot be acceptable in this situation -- and the players are as much to blame if not more than the coaches. The general manager assembled this team. He gets some of the blame, too. Don't forget -- Jason Garrett is still a young coach. He's still learning the nuances of play-calling and defenses. I believe he's going to be a superb offensive coordinator soon and one day a superb head coach in this league. If he leaves here, he likely will wind up like Payton and Sparano -- a success. And everyone will be wondering why the Cowboys let him get away.
12:24 [Comment From anguiano3000]
Do you feel that the Dallas Cowboys will have better team chemistry next year?
12:25 Rick Gosselin: Getting rid of Pacman was a start. Let's see what happens the rest of the offseason. Remember, it's a team game. Teams win - not individuals.

which of our 3 stud rbs do we trade? Choice while he is hot? Dare I say the Barbarian? Can Felix stay healthy? What do we do?
12:27 Rick Gosselin: Why trade any of them? Two of them got hurt this season. You can never have enough quality running backs. The Giants use three running backs -- Brandon Jacobs, Derrick Ward and Ahmad Bradshaw -- and have the best rushing attack in the NFL. You don't see the Giants out shopping Ward or Bradshaw. I'd love to see the 2009 Cowboys rotating Barber, Jones and Choice through the backfield all in the same game. Different looks, different problems for the defense.Running back is a strength of this team. Don't make it a weakness by giving players away.

But Arizona isn't one of the home teams I expected to win -- and Indianapolis isn't one of the road teams I expected to lose. That's why they play the games. What would keep Jerry from hiring Mike Shanahan as an consultant this year and having him in place as maybe the best option during next year of even mid-season replacement?
12:31 Rick Gosselin: Mike Shanahan wants to be a head coach, not a consultant. He wants to be the guy leading an organization -- not a fallback candidate should Wade Phillips fail. I see Shanahan either on the sideline calling the shots for a team this season or in a TV studio providing Sunday morning chatter.

Is Tim Tebow an NFL quarterback?
12:34 Rick Gosselin: Heading into last fall, many NFL types didn't think so. They viewed him as a tight end prospect. But I'd be surprised if he doesn't get a look at quarterback first. He has the size to absorb hits in the pocket -- and size is one of the first things NFL teams look for in a quarterback. You can't get hurt every time you get hit. Is he a first-rounder? Maybe not. But he'll be intriguing enough to go in the second. The guys wins. And the NFL is all about winning.
12:36 Rick Gosselin: That'll do it for this chat folks. Sorry I couldn't get to more of your questions. I'm headed to Nashville first thing tomorrow and hope to see two quality playoff games this weekend. I look forward to chatting with everyone another two weeks down the road. Enjoy the games this weekend.
