When the Cowboys open up practice Wednesday, they will have all of their healthy draft picks under contract.
Third rounder Jason Williams, a linebacker,as a rookie, and Texas A&M quarterback Stephen McGee, a fourth-round pick, agreed to four-year deals Tuesday night. Both players attended the kickoff concert at the Alamodome.
The only rookie not to come to terms yet is third-round pick Robert Brewster, whose rookie season is over after having surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle.
Williams, the Cowboys' first pick (No. 69 overall), is expected to be a special teams' ace as a rookie and work into the substitute defensive packages. At Western Illinois he did not play a traditional linebacker spot, standing over the guard and center. He was disruptive with 14 forced fumbles to go with 289 tackles and 15 sacks. He had a school-record six forced fumbles in 2008.
Because he did not play much as a senior at Texas A&M, many were surprised McGee was picked with the first pick of the fourth round. The Cowboys love his size, arm and make up. A shoulder injury hurt his playing time as a senior, but he left College Station as the Aggies' all-time leader in completion percentage (59.5), second in total offense (7,225 yards), fourth in passing yards (5,475) and third in rushing yards by a quarterback (1,750).
He will have time to learn behind Tony Romo and Jon Kitna as a rookie.

I love Stephen Jones. He's so professional in every way he handles stuff.

Aces.

I believe he will get Ware done sooner rather than later now.

I am most definitely expecting an improvement in ST's this year, but is anyone worried at all with all that youth out there?

Covering kicks isnt the same as learning defenses, but I would actually like to sign Keith Davis for a vet min for special teams next year.

Who cares if he cant play safety, we have plenty, just use him on special teams.

In 1992 we were the youngest team in the NFL.

No, I'm not worried about the youth.

In defense, we did have a HOF quarterback and wide receiver, and a future first ballot HOF runningback, and the #1 defense that year as well. But in general I'm not worried about the youth, except maybe in the secondary.

That does help a little. ST is the best place to start your career as far as learning.

But I'm done comparing what we did back then in the 90's. That was almost 20 years ago, and those types of teams dont come around very often.

Who's to say Romo doesnt go to the hall, along with Barber and Witten?

I could see us having the number one defense next year.

I doubt Barber makes the HOF. But I think Romo can def. get in if he wins two rings. At this point, Witten is a sure-fire hall of famer to me if he keeps going the way he's going.

But then, you're worrying about the talent, not the youth.

Jason Williams-LB- Cowboys Jul. 29 - 9:08 am et

Cowboys agreed to terms with third-round LB Jason Williams on a four-year contract.

Williams, the Cowboys first draft pick, has three-down potential. He's raw coming out of Western Illinois, so he's expected to be a key special teamer while pushing Bobby Carpenter for the nickel and dime linebacker role as a rookie.

Stephen McGee-QB- Cowboys Jul. 29 - 9:03 am et

Cowboys agreed to terms with fourth-round QB Stephen McGee on a four-year contract. According to the San Antonio Express-News, the deal includes a $532,000 signing bonus.

The Cowboys are reportedly high on the former Aggie's size, arm and makeup, and he drew praise for his poise and accuracy in rookie minicamp. He's expected to develop into the long-term backup for Tony Romo.

I was thinking about that, there are going to be alot of young players on ST, hopefully the coaching will counter the youth.

Hopefully they take on the old Jerry Glanville mindset of storming the beach. I never thought much of Jerry Glanville the HC but Glanville put out some of the best special teams unit with what he called storming the beach mentality. If there is one unit on your team you want running down field like crazed animals it is special teams

Excellent work by Stephen Jones. Now to get DWare wrapped up with a long term deal and everything is set to go out and start kicking people in the teeth for the 2009 season.

I am. We'll be faster and better on special teams, but we should just expect a couple of mistakes, especially early in the year. Special teams gets more and more sophisticated, and it just takes one guy going out of his lane or blocking the wrong guy to cause a big play for the other team.

But it should be worth it later in the year.
