Adam Jones: He gets to start - even though it's left cornerback - so we'll get a chance to see whether he can continue to knock off the rust.

Tashard Choice: Felix Jones gets most of the attention, but Choice has done a good job of running and on special teams.

Martellus Bennett: He flashed some skills, especially blocking last week, so it's time to see if he can do it again. Consistency is the name of the game.

Bobby Carpenter: With Kevin Burnett, Anthony Spencer and Justin Rogers out or dinged, Carpenter will have more than enough opportunity to prove he deserves playing time.

Tony Romo: He wasn't sharp last week, so it's time for him to round into regular-season form.

Who's on your list?

For me, it's . . . .

1. Carpenter - I'd like to see him make some plays

2. Hatcher - I'd like to see him make an impact

3. M. Bennett - Let's see some improvement

4. One of our 5th or 6th CBs - Oglesby (sp?)/Ball

5. Walden - We know who our top LBs are, and guys like Burnett will be on the team. I'd like to see one of our "2nd tier" LBs step up.

Stanback - From reports I've read, with Austin injured, the team is trying to add his speed to the offense. I'd like to see him get some real work with the first team offense.

Bennett - It would be nice to see some quality on-field performance wash away some of the negative off-field stuff. He's also been getting some first-team work.

Erik Walden - With Spencer injured, a good performance over the next two games can go a long way toward securing a roster spot. I think the next two games are huge for him.

Adam Jones - Extended playing time with the 1st string will give him the chance to show how ready he is - or isn't.

Felix Jones - Early showings have been impressive, making me want to see more of him in the starting offense. Hopefully we will tonight.

Romo wasn't sharp but I guess if he hit the bomb to Hurd he would have been lights out.

His passes to T.O were on the money. So basically he was not sharp because he missed that one. Interesting.

1. Stanback - We've invested a bit into this guy whom, with the exception of that return last week, we have seen little to nothing from. I'd like to see some of the promise that others have seen...because thus far, I've missed it. I hope it's there.

2. Carpenter - Having been one of his biggest supporters, I'd like to see him play like he belongs in the NFL. He's shown flashes, but I haven't seen anything from him this preseason that justifies my argument for him the last year or two. To this point, his best performances were the two games he started in his rookie year.

3. A. Jones - He started to look like a cornerback last week. Let's see if he can keep the momentum. If he returns to game form before the season opener, our defense will be better for it.

4. Bennett - After watching last weeks game and the close ups from wednesday's Hard Knocks, I've become intrigued by this kid. He's whiny, and has a poor attitude, but he looks like he can play. His blocking was particularly impressive.

5. Death Stryker 1 - I was a big advocate for drafting a FB this April, but have since grown to love this kid. It looks as if he's improved his blocking, and now I'd like to see him become a dominant force at it. I want him to drop LB's on their *****.

Only problem with Walden (who I like -- nobody talked about a few good plays he made in the first game) is that he's really a weakside linebacker. He's fast and quick, but isn't very strong. With Spencer out, what we really need is a strongside LB.

But I guess Walden could at least help out in the 3-rush-LB look if the coaches think he knows the defense well enough.

Anyway, I'm looking at the usual suspects -- Bennett to see if he can keep improving (because he has the talent), Felix for the pure fun factor, Scandrick to see if he keeps looking like a player, and Carpenter to see if we're screwed if Zach gets hurt.

Spencer would have been at the top of my list but since he's out it would have to be Hatcher.

Don't forget that Bennett is coming from a program under Franchione that didn't stress discipline and was lackadasical. He even admitted that it was very relaxed and he really didn't have to learn anything - just go out there and play.

Now that he's with the Cowboys, my thought is he's having trouble adjusting to being told what to do, where to be and when to be there. Once he's adjusted, he'll be a stud player for us. I'm not worried.

With his speed and size, it would be nice if he could crack the roster, but I don't know who we would cut to do so. Maybe it will come down to him and Amendola. Would like to see a lot out of both of them tonight.

1) Sam Hurd - Amidst all the Miles Austin and Isaiah Stanback talk, Sam Hurd seems like the forgotten man. But the reality is he was our #3 last year and he still might have been our #3 this year even with a healthy Austin. I'm hoping he reminds the fans of that tonight.

2) Mike Jenkins - Struggled last week against Denver's starters, but he didn't have much of a pass-rush helping him out. A rebound game would be nice.

3) Tank Johnson - Another strong showing from Tank at the NT position should (hopefully) cement his role as the starter there, moving Ratliff to DE and Spears to the bench.

4) Roy Williams - I've been ripping Roy for a little while, ever since his killer instinct vanished. But I was his biggest fan back when he'd deliver a game-changing "kill-shot" seemingly every game. I was happy to see him amped up on Hard Knocks, and I'll be ecstatic if he makes a huge hit or two tonight. A return of the "old Roy" would be a huge addition to our D.

5) PacAdam Jones - If he can build off of last week's performance and really lock down his side of the field, he will have a great chance to have all the rust knocked off by September 7th. Another explosive punt return would be nice (minus the post-play penalty). I hope he plays a full 3 quarters tonight... he hasn't played a full game since December 2006, so he needs all the game-speed conditioning he can get.

Five more worth watching vs. Texans

Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips

OK, we'll focus solely on the battle for the Governor's Cup for the rest of the night. This is serious business, with the starters expected to play three quarters.

Superstar columnist Jean-Jacques Taylor is ahead of us. He posted his five to watch (Adam "Pacman" Jones, Tashard Choice, Bobby Carpenter, Martellus Bennett and Tony Romo) this morning.

Here are five more:

CB Mike Jenkins: Unlike the first two preseason games, the first-round pick won't start, with Pacman taking his place. But Jenkins will play left cornerback in the substitution packages. He had a rough night in Denver. Let's see how he bounces back.

WR Isaiah Stanback: With Miles Austin out, Stanback should get an opportunity to run routes for Tony Romo in four-receiver sets. While he's progressed as a receiver, Stanback's best chance to contribute this season is on special teams. He can extend his lead in the competition to be the primary kickoff returner.

LT Flozell Adams: Flo really doesn't have anything to prove, but he'll line up against one of the league's elite pass rushers. Flo vs. Mario Williams should be fun to watch.

RB Felix Jones: So far, pretty spectacular for the first-round pick. He's come close to three of his first 12 pro touches for TDs. Can he take one to the house in his Texas Stadium debut?

LB Zach Thomas: The Cowboys will let loose a little on defense tonight. That means Thomas, who has been the defense's best player so far this preseason, should come flying up the middle on a few blitzes.

Choice - If he shows enough to become part of the RB rotation, the Cowboys will have a better trio than what the Eagles used to have in Buckwalter, Staley, and Westbrook.

DBs - Several players, but mostly I'm hoping that the DBs will begin to play better as a unit and will avoid penalty flags.

Stanback - I'm not anti-Hurd, but he just doesn't do much for me. I'd like someone else to become a part of the mix at 3rd WR now that Austin is sidelined. Stanback probably isn't ready yet, but ....
