I hope Kevin Burnett gets back quickly

As a reporter, you enter most relationships with the attitude that players, coaches and front office types are assets - people that can help you do your job.

You don't get emotionally attached to your assets because you understand that one story they don't like - sometimes it's just a paragraph - can ruin the relationship.

Sometimes, though, you hit it off with player, coach or front office type and the relationship becomes more involved. You're not friends, but you're more than business associates.

Now, you would think that means you're easy on those people. Actually, it doesn't. If you have a good realtionship with someone, you can ask them anything - the harder, the better - and they will give you the truth because they trust you and they know you'll be fair with them whether they like the story or not.

That's a long way of saying, I'm closer to Kevin Burnett than most players.

I've always liked Burnett - even as a rookie - because he's an independent thinker with a high opinion of himself.

I like those kind of guys because they're never afraid to tell you what they think - publicly or privately. Some guys never reveal anything because they're always afraid the coach is going to cut them or put them in the doghouse.

What they fail to realize is that as long as they perform on the field, the coach will love them even if he hates them.
Burnett and I did a show together last year, so our families got to know each other.

My wife, Lorraine, spent time with his wife, Maia, during training camp, while we were each at practice. And I tease his sons - 3-year-old Kamurhan and 2-year-old Kevin III when I see them.

And he gives my son, A.J., a helicopter ride every time he sees him.

Burnett will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, so he prepared for this season even more diligently than last. We spent a lot of time talking about whether the Cowboys would re-sign him and if they didn't what kind of teams would covet him. We talked about what kind of money he might command.

That's why I hope he has a speedy recovery. This is a huge year for him and I'd hate to see it ruined because of injury, something that has plagued him virtually his entire career in Dallas.

Even if Burnett has a big year he won't likely be able to turn that into a huge free agent contract.

With his injury history and unspectacular play thus far into his career, he isn't exactly in a position to command a big deal.

I think 2 or 3 draft picks will be spent on the linebacker position next year.. Carpenter, Burnett and maybe Ellis might be outta here. Plus there's no telling how long Zack is going to stay especially if he gets a ring..

I sure hope Burnett is a Cowboy next year. For all his injuries he has only missed 3 games and has a lot of upside at a reasonable price.

While his past here is somewhat checkered have we not seen that free agency these days is very very kind to its recipients. Because of the ever increasing cap, and the fact that few quality players get to free agency these days, the ones that do are rewarded very handsomely.

If Burnett gets to free agency he will find a suitor who will pay him very well. Count on it.

At some point you have to figure Dallas can't keep everyone, especially those who are less that full-time in Dallas because of depth. Personally I think there is a good chance all that points to Burnett being elsewhere next year.

I Like 57 just as much as the next guy but a bone bruise on my femur is what got me micro fracture ...just saying... I hope thats not the case the young man seems to be a heck of a guy but his health seems to be getting in the way. I am sure he'll make a ton of money this offseason by my perspective but I wouldn't say he's going to get a LUCRATIVE NFL contract

I really don't understand the point of Frenchie's article: I hope Kevin Burnett recovers soon because I consider him almost as a friend.

Who cares?

Doesn't every one of his readers hope that Burnett recovers quickly?

I like Burnett's versatility but the injury bug always hits him. Granted he's only missed a few games his entire career which is good but wow I really thought he would really turn it on this year.

Yeah, I thought this article was going to be from a football perspective. "I hope Kevin Burnett gets back quickly" because he's the third down linebacker and essential to a certain blitz scheme and makes the play calls, etc. This article is the equivalent of "I hope Kevin Burnett has a nice birthday party (because I'm invited)."

JJT, do you hope that Marion Barber suffers a degenerative hip injury because he rarely talks to the media?

Try to be impartial. If we want to read about personal relationships and what you're family is doing, we'll just check out Peter King's Monday Morning Quarterback and Field Hockey column.
