SportsDay's Jon Machota answered questions in a chat Friday. Here are some highlights.
Question: Which one of the Cowboy free agents is likely to make the biggest splash or impact in 2015?
Jon Machota: Greg Hardy will make the biggest impact. Even if his suspension isn't reduced and he only plays six regular season games, he's too elite not to make a few significant game-changing plays. Darren McFadden would be next on my list, especially if he can stay healthy. Even if Randle plays at a high level, there will be plenty of carries for McFadden. Next would be Jasper Brinkley followed by Corey White. I don't consider La'el Collins a free agent. If I did, he would be No. 2 on the list. He has an opportunity to start every game this season.
Question: Is La'el Collins really that happy?
Jon Machota: He has seemed that way to me. He was working at right tackle last week and left guard this week. I think he ends up battling for the left guard spot against Ron Leary this season and eventually becomes the team's future right tackle. The foot placement is obviously different on the right and left side so he's been working on that, but I think he's talented enough to make the transition when needed. He played on the left side throughout his college career, so it makes sense to start him there, potentially lining up four first-round talents next to each other. How many other teams are doing that right now?
Question: My opinion is that Jerry should place Jason Witten in the Ring of Honor on the day he retires. Who has better exemplified the spirit of the Cowboys or the past decade?
Jon Machota: I agree. Witten is one of the best to ever play his position and he's been a Walter Payton NFL Man of Year. I can't think of many who deserve the honor more than him.
Question: Which one of the undrafted college free agents are likely to contribute more in 2015?
Jon Machota: La'el Collins will contribute the most, but I really don't consider a probable first-round pick as a true undrafted rookie free agent. Of the others in the group, it comes down to the wide receiver position. That would be George Farmer, Antwan Goodley, Deontay Greenberry, Nick Harwell and Lucky Whitehead. Needing to replace Dwayne Harris in the return game, I think Whitehead is the leader in the clubhouse. He's the smallest in the group at 5-10, so he'd likely be a backup slot WR behind Cole Beasley. But what he could bring in the return game is why he has a realistic shot of making the 53-man roster.
