IRVING — Tony Romo has proved he can return from back surgery to perform at a high level.

The Cowboys quarterback has shown he can handle the pain that goes with a pair of transverse process fractures to record his highest rating of the season in a win over Jacksonville.

But will he be able to navigate what lies ahead?

Once the clock starts Sunday night against the New York Football Giants, as Cowboys coach Jason Garrett likes to say, Dallas will play two games in a span of five days. After Sunday is an NFC East showdown with Philadelphia on Thanksgiving afternoon.

One week later is a road game in Chicago.

That’s three games in 12 days for the calendar impaired.

Apprehensive is too strong a word. But Romo must wonder how his back will hold up to a workload unlike any he’s had in the 11 months since surgery to repair a herniated disk in his lower back. Is he far enough down the road to be confident that his back is strong enough to deal with this stretch?

“I think we’ll address that next week,’’ Romo said. “Right now, I have a full week, plus the bye from last week to be able to get myself ready and that was big.

“I think after the game against New York, we’ll reassess everything, but that’s not on my mind right now.’’

Romo hasn’t practiced on three consecutive days since Week 2 of the regular season. He never practiced more than two consecutive days in training camp. The goal has been to avoid the repetition that would leave the back in a constant state of irritation.

Must he alter his practice routine during this stretch?

“I don’t think I’m going to do anything,’’ said Romo, who concentrated on his core work instead of practicing with the team as he’s done every Wednesday since Sept. 17. “It’s really about this week and getting ready for the Giants.

He is focused on Game 11, as it should be....he didn't make the schedule, so it is truly one game at a time

the OC can help him by getting a strong running game going and doing a lot of quick outs, anything to reduce the amount of whacks he will take against NY

I have a feeling that the NYG game will be run-heavy for both teams. At least I hope so.

3 games in 12 days is just ridiculous. What in the heck were the NFL thinking here?

As Romo said you deal with it 1 game at a time. Deal with what he needs to do for NY game then ***** what he has to do to get ready for Philly.

All the more reason why they have been so careful up to this point with his workload during the week. Do you really feel the Cowboys did not take this part of the schedule into consideration? Then you're a moron.

I see what you did there. And I like the way you think. A lot.

Please explain to me why an unknown somehow is more preferable to the known?

You may be right.
I may be crazy.
But it just may be a lunatic you're looking for.

Sorry, I slipped into a Billy Joel moment.

From week 3 on, every team that plays a Thursday game has 3 games in 12 days (unless they have a bye in there).

Thank you. I hate the "3 games in 12 days" point. It's dumb.

Doesn't every team have at least 2 games in 8 days every single week?

So, the team has had plenty of rest for this next game. Then its a short week and then a normal length week - then its 10 days to the next game.

I like the fact that the cowboys had a bye right before this and then play 2 thursday games in a row, then have 10 days break before the eagles game in philly.

So the cowboys play NYG while the eagles play Tenn.

Then on a short week the eagles come to dallas - Advantage for dallas.
Then the cowboys get a normal week and go to play chicago while the eagles get a 10 day week and go to seattle. Expect seattle to be a more physical game for philly then the bears for dallas.
Then the cowboys get a 10 day week to get ready for the second match with Philly who gets a normal week- another advantage for dallas.

For starters, it is truly preposterous that Dallas is scheduled to play 3 games in 12 days.
There is pretty much a certainty that someone is going to get hurt.

I think I heard that this is the 1st time ever that a team has played a road Sunday night game and then also played again on Thursday.
Lunacy.

But the reward is that if they can come out of this with maybe 2 wins and then get a 10 day stretch afterwards, it could end well.

3 games in 12 days but also 5 games in 36 days because of the bye so after all that is factored in its not so much.
