IRVING — Tony Romo has proved he can return from back surgery to perform at a high level.
The Cowboys quarterback has shown he can handle the pain that goes with a pair of transverse process fractures to record his highest rating of the season in a win over Jacksonville.
But will he be able to navigate what lies ahead?
Once the clock starts Sunday night against the New York Football Giants, as Cowboys coach Jason Garrett likes to say, Dallas will play two games in a span of five days. After Sunday is an NFC East showdown with Philadelphia on Thanksgiving afternoon.
One week later is a road game in Chicago.
That’s three games in 12 days for the calendar impaired.
Apprehensive is too strong a word. But Romo must wonder how his back will hold up to a workload unlike any he’s had in the 11 months since surgery to repair a herniated disk in his lower back. Is he far enough down the road to be confident that his back is strong enough to deal with this stretch?
“I think we’ll address that next week,’’ Romo said. “Right now, I have a full week, plus the bye from last week to be able to get myself ready and that was big.
“I think after the game against New York, we’ll reassess everything, but that’s not on my mind right now.’’
Romo hasn’t practiced on three consecutive days since Week 2 of the regular season. He never practiced more than two consecutive days in training camp. The goal has been to avoid the repetition that would leave the back in a constant state of irritation.
Must he alter his practice routine during this stretch?
“I don’t think I’m going to do anything,’’ said Romo, who concentrated on his core work instead of practicing with the team as he’s done every Wednesday since Sept. 17. “It’s really about this week and getting ready for the Giants.
