Man I sure hope Ratliff returns to his old form or his cap hit is gonna kill us going forward. I hope this isn't throwing good money after bad. But I will say that I think that the 4-3 is a lot better fit for him.

Not really. After this year we are on the hook for 4 mill on the cap -- if we restructure him, we are likely giving him about 4 mill in bonus -- so in total we'd bee in for around 7 mill to him. His 2014 salary is 5.5 mill, so if we cut him we'd have a net 1.5 mill cap hit. That's not great but it ain't exactly a killer hit.

This is throwing good money after bad. This whole off-season has been full of bad moves on salary cap issues. I think this is what things look like right before everything goes down the toilet. There will be no cutting some of these players now due to the cap hit. This is a mess. Eas keeping Spencer worth this ?

Have to admit, some of this kicking the can down the road thought process reminds me some of Washington....not the team.

But they do need to clear room in the current year if they want to be active at all (even as bit players) in the FA market.

I wonder what the cap commitments in 2014 and 2015 are with all these additional restructures.

They keep pushing more and more guaranteed money into the future. It's going to make it a challenge to sign players like Dez, Sean Lee, Bruce Carter, etc to those mega 2nd contracts if those continue playing well and manage to stay healthy.

There is only so much money to go around and when all the guaranteed money has been pushed into the future it gives you a lot less flexibility in the future.

You have a good observation. Jerry's curly-headed grandboy will foot the bill much like our grandchildren will foot the bill for us. :laugh2:

This seems to be a lot of restructuring to keep the same players on the field that has produced back-to-back 8-8 seasons.

In my opinion, no, Spencer is no worth keeping, let alone worth restructuring some of these guys to keep him.

There will be other contracts that can be restructured, or restructured again in 2014 or 2015. It may be a squeeze where we can't go out and pick up many other teams FAs, but it's already being planned for with our own guys. If we want to keep them, we'll figure out a way.

Yep. RADPLAN was such a smarter approach.

The Cowboys have more contracts to restructure and paperwork to file when they return to the office Monday.

I thought they had already redone Livings and Bernadeau? The just need to cut bait with Connor.

They did, there's not much money left to save with those 2. Their base salaries have already been slashed.

There's not a lot of money to be saved by restructuring Scandrick either, his base is only $2MM at the moment.

Connor does need to be cut, he saves 3 Million.

The body of the article says rework and the title says restructure. That's not the same thing.

Exactly. I wonder if a couple of the guys are taking pay cuts.

I completely agree with you here.

We'll be cap-strapped to keep a back-to-back 8-8 team together and then still be paying for it later on down the road.

I don't believe they were ever officially redone. I believe you can restructure contracts once per year is all. So paycuts, restructure, whatever are one and done for the year. So if those two (Livings & Bern) are still in play, they have not yet been redone.

1st and foremost this is about keeping Spencer as his tag pushed us back over the cap. Then its about room to sign draft picks. THEN its about free agency, if there is any room leftover.

And yes, you are spot on about kicking the can down the road. Where the org needs success to make this approach work is in the draft. You can absorb big dead money IF they are replaced with players making similar contributions for much less money - in other words, rookies playing under their first contract.

One good possibility is replacing Spencer for 2014. Buys us another year to draft or groom (Crawford) a replacement. Letting him go in 2014 currently stands to save us 10+ M in immediate cap room. Despite use of the tag I think the FO has some clear parameters they're willing to do (or not) in keeping Spencer under a multi-year deal.

I can't stand his incompetence. I can easily live with Jerry as an owner. In fact I like the old man and his willingness to spend. But he needs to fire his son and replace himself as GM.

These news are saddening.
