If the Western Conference All-Stars need a tour guide Sunday at Cowboys Stadium, Chris Paul is their guy.
While Dirk Nowitzki's first trip to the Arlington stadium will come Sunday, Paul took his New Orleans' teammates there for the Dec. 13 game between the Cowboys and San Diego Chargers, so he knows about the center-hung scoreboard, the plush setup of the club areas, the field suites and the star that will be covered up by the basketball court Sunday.
The next night across town at American Airlines Center, Paul's sports tour took a hit when the Hornets lost to the Mavericks, 94-90.
Not only does Paul know the ins and outs of Cowboys Stadium, he's well aware of the Ring of Honor, the Super Bowl wins and who the Original 88 is. He probably knows what ails the current team, although he did not get into the Cowboys' draft needs during the media availability with the NBA All Stars on Friday at the Hyatt Regency.
Just a hunch, though, he would like to see the Cowboys draft an offensive tackle or two in the early rounds and maybe figure out that field goal kicker thing.
"My dad [Charles] was the biggest Drew Pearson fan," Paul said. "He used to wear a No. 88 jersey and stuff like that."
Paul's adopted city just won Super Bowl XLIV, and he predicts New Orleans will be crazy for the next eight or nine months as a result. After the Saints beat Indianapolis, Paul was on Canal Street near the French Quarter soaking up the atmosphere, and he took in the championship parade Tuesday.
"To see those guys and close to 800,000 people being in the streets, it gave me goose bumps," Paul said. "I hate that I'm hurt, but you see the Saints win the Super Bowl and I know, personally for me, I need to see what that feels like."
But because of his father's devotion, the son picked up on the Cowboys' love affair, too.
The December visit to Cowboys Stadium wasn't even Paul's first football trip to the area. During his freshman year at Wake Forest, he snuck in a basketball game at Moody Coliseum against SMU, but well before that his family made a number of visits to Texas Stadium while he was growing up in Winston-Salem, N.C.
"I went to college with Cowboys sheets on my bed," Paul said.
He remembers meeting Emmitt Smith before a New York Giants' game years ago and they now share the same agency. Same with Deion Sanders. Paul even watched last week's announcement for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2010 that includes Smith, the NFL's all-time leading rusher.
"He called me earlier this year," Paul said. "It's all crazy and surreal. I'm excited to see him go into the Hall of Fame."
Paul was hoping to do something Smith never did at Cowboys Stadium – play a game, but he needs crutches to get around these days. He plans on being back in a month or so.
"I'm sure it's going to be nuts," Paul said. "And everybody is like, 'How's it going to be playing basketball there?' Once the ball is thrown up, everything else goes out the window. It'll just be the same: a court with two goals."

We didn't see many Cowboys during our visit to the celebrity All-Star game or Rookie-Sophomore game on Friday night.
We did run into Terence Newman, who was doing some interviews for ESPN.
But we did talk to Miami Heat forward Michael Beasley and he told us the highlight of his weekend.
"It's been good. Fun," said Beasley, who played in the Rookie-Sophomore game. "I got to see a lot of old friends and superstars. I met Emmitt Smith, that made my weekend. I'm a big Dallas Cowboys fan."
When asked where did he meet Smith, the newly elected Pro Football Hall of Famer, Beasley said, "It was at a pool party. I met him with [actress] Vivica Fox. Now that was real high on my list."
Beasley said he thought the Cowboys should have won the Super Bowl in 2009. As for 2010, "We'll win the Supre Bowl next year."
