Cliff Avril knocks Dallas quarterback Tony Romo out of the game with this sack on the third play of the game Thursday. The Dallas Cowboys played the Seattle Seahawks in preseason football Thursday, August 25, 2016 at CenturyLink Field in Seattle. Romo sustained a broken bone in his back when he was hit from behind by Seattles Cliff Avrill and slid awkwardly on the third play of a preseason game. (Dean Rutz/The Seattle Times)
1. Carolina. Cam Newton became the NFL's MVP in 2015 without his top receiver, Kelvin Benjamin, who missed 2015 with a knee injury. He's back in 2016.
2. Arizona. Only two teams in the NFL finished in the Top 5 in both offense and defense last season, the Cardinals and Seahawks. Now Chandler Jones and Robert Nkemdiche bulk up the defensive line.
3. Pittsburgh. The Steelers won 10 games and went to the playoffs despite losing Pro Bowl RB Le'Veon Bell for eight games and QB Ben Roethlisberger for four with injuries. This is now a healthy team.
4. New England. The Patriots begin the quest for an eighth consecutive AFC East crown but, for the first time, without Tom Brady. He'll sit the first four games for his role in Deflategate.
5. Green Bay. The Packers won 10 games and reached the NFC semifinals in 2015 without top WR Jordy Nelson. That was a 98-catch, 1,519-yard, 13-TD chunk of the offense missing. Now he's back.
6. Cincinnati. The Bengals have won two of the last three AFC Norths and four since 2005. But Cincinnati hasn't won a playoff games since 1990, the longest current drought in the league.
7. Seattle. Marshawn Lynch and his Beast mode are gone. But Russell Wilson is still taking the snaps and the defense remains the Legion of Boom. So Super Bowl contention remains a reality.
8. Kansas City. The Chiefs won 11 games in 2015 despite the injury absence of their best offensive weapon, RB Jamaal Charles, for 11 games. He's back and so is the KC running game.
