Now that prospects got a chance to show their skills during the recent scouting combine in Indianapolis, I thought it would be a good time to see how the draft experts have adjusted their mock drafts.
No surprise, adding a defensive player continues to be what most think Dallas will do at No. 27.
The Cowboys were giving off the vibe in Indy that they’ll follow last year’s plan of taking the best player available, even if that means potentially going offensive lineman for the fourth time in the last five drafts. I personally believe there will be a very good defensive line prospect still available and they’ll upgrade arguably their biggest weakness.
But here’s what the experts are currently projecting for Dallas.
NFLDraftScout.com’s Dane Brugler:
Pick: Owamagbe Odighizuwa, DE, UCLA.
Comment: “Dallas needs to address the defensive line early in the 2015 NFL Draft and if the medicals check out alright, Odighizuwa is worth this pick.”
NFL.com’s Daniel Jeremiah:
Pick: Bud Dupree, DE, Kentucky.
Comment: “Dupree hasn’t put it all together yet, but his upside as a pass rusher is sky high.”
SI.com’s Don Banks:
Pick: Melvin Gordon, RB, Wisconsin.
Comment: “With the Cowboys poised to see DeMarco Murray, the league’s leading rusher, depart in free agency, Gordon would give Dallas a headline-name replacement who led the NCAA in rushing with 2,587 yards.”
CBSSports.com’s Pat Kirwan:
Pick: Carl Davis, DT, Iowa.
Comment: “He is disruptive inside and also ran 5.06 at 320 lbs. Henry Melton has been released and the Cowboys need big, quick people inside on the defensive line.”
BleacherReport.com’s Matt Miller:
Pick: Eddie Goldman, DT, Florida State.
Comment: “Goldman moves very well for 6’4″, 336 pounds (he didn’t test at the combine), and has the type of penetration/anchoring skills that can become the foundation of a defensive line. With Henry Melton gone via free agency and Tyrone Crawford a good, versatile defensive lineman, Goldman can take his natural spot on the line and fuel the defense as a three-down player.”
BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1’s Walter Cherepinsky:
Pick: Eli Harold, DE, Virginia.
Comment: “The Cowboys couldn’t get any pressure on Colt McCoy in an embarrassing Monday night defeat. Mark Sanchez had a clean pocket on Thanksgiving. Aaron Rodgers had all the time he needed in the divisional round of the playoffs. That has to change. Several upgrades can be obtained on the defensive line.”
NFL.com’s Charles Davis:
Pick: Denzel Perryman, LB, Miami.
Comment: “Perryman did not run as well as expected at the NFL Scouting Combine, but he’s a player and a striking hitter.”
CBSSports.com’s Rob Rang:
Pick: Owamagbe Odighizuwa, DE, UCLA.
Comment: “Odighizuwa lacks name recognition but the 6-3, 267-pound defender is powerful, active and instinctive.”
BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1’s Charlie Campbell:
Pick: Malcom Brown, DT, Texas.
Comment: “Brown collected 6.5 sacks, 71 tackles, 13 for a loss, one pass batted and two forced fumbles in 2014. He was tough to block with a good motor. The 6-foot-4, 305-pounder possesses the size and speed for the NFL. Brown has speed to close on the quarterback to go along with size to shed blocks.”
