I think so highly of the group known as the Cowboys’ three 2015 first-round picks that all three have made the top 20 of my 53-man roster ranking.
Yes, some projecting is involved. Maybe the three aren’t better than some of the veterans they are ranked ahead of, but I like the upside that we should see glimpses of this season.
Here are numbers 20-11.
20.) Randy Gregory, DE. If it wasn’t for the off-field concerns, the Cowboys would have never had a chance at landing Gregory late in the first round, much less late in the second. He might not be an every down player early in his career, but Gregory should make an impact on passing downs from the right defensive end spot.
19.) Byron Jones, CB. He’s been labeled a workout warrior because of his impressive showing at the combine. But I think Jones is more than that. I think he has the potential to be a more athletic version of Brandon Carr. Carr has started every game of his NFL career because he has ideal size and works hard at his craft. I see a lot of the same in Jones.
18.) Brandon Carr, CB. No Cowboy defender has been more criticized than Carr over the last two seasons. But every game, Carr is out there defending the other team’s top wide receiver. Even though he finished without an interception for the first time in his career, he played some of his best ball down the stretch. And there’s something to be said for a player that hasn’t missed a start in seven seasons.
17.) Barry Church, S. Like J.J. Wilcox, Church continues to improve at the other starting safety spot. He’ll probably never be the type of defensive back to intercept five or six passes in a season, but he’s always around the ball making plays. He was the Cowboys’ leading tackler in the regular season and postseason in 2014.
16.) DeMarcus Lawrence, DE. His showing in the playoffs [two sacks, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries] made me notice a player that was emerging at the right time. I think he takes a significant step in Year 2, leading the team in sacks as he establishes himself as the starter at left defensive end.
