Dallas Cowboys rookie cornerback Byron Jones (31) participates in drills during the Dallas Cowboys rookie minicamp held at Valley Ranch on Friday, May 8, 2015. (Louis DeLuca/The Dallas Morning News)

I think so highly of the group known as the Cowboys’ three 2015 first-round picks that all three have made the top 20 of my 53-man roster ranking.

Yes, some projecting is involved. Maybe the three aren’t better than some of the veterans they are ranked ahead of, but I like the upside that we should see glimpses of this season.

Here are numbers 20-11.

20.) Randy Gregory, DE. If it wasn’t for the off-field concerns, the Cowboys would have never had a chance at landing Gregory late in the first round, much less late in the second. He might not be an every down player early in his career, but Gregory should make an impact on passing downs from the right defensive end spot.

19.) Byron Jones, CB. He’s been labeled a workout warrior because of his impressive showing at the combine. But I think Jones is more than that. I think he has the potential to be a more athletic version of Brandon Carr. Carr has started every game of his NFL career because he has ideal size and works hard at his craft. I see a lot of the same in Jones.

18.) Brandon Carr, CB. No Cowboy defender has been more criticized than Carr over the last two seasons. But every game, Carr is out there defending the other team’s top wide receiver. Even though he finished without an interception for the first time in his career, he played some of his best ball down the stretch. And there’s something to be said for a player that hasn’t missed a start in seven seasons.

17.) Barry Church, S. Like J.J. Wilcox, Church continues to improve at the other starting safety spot. He’ll probably never be the type of defensive back to intercept five or six passes in a season, but he’s always around the ball making plays. He was the Cowboys’ leading tackler in the regular season and postseason in 2014.

16.) DeMarcus Lawrence, DE. His showing in the playoffs [two sacks, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries] made me notice a player that was emerging at the right time. I think he takes a significant step in Year 2, leading the team in sacks as he establishes himself as the starter at left defensive end.

Beasley belongs on this tier instead of two rookies or Lawrence. Not to say that it could not change, but his importance to what we do is understated in this series.

Not sure how I feel about Mincey being ranked in the top 10 on the roster. He led the team in sacks and played hard last season but is he really one of the top 10 players on the roster going into 2015?

13.) Rolando McClain, LB.
If he would’ve stayed healthy, McClain would’ve cracked the top 10. The defense just played on another level when McClain was right last season. It’ll be very interesting to see what a healthy McClain looks like next to a healthy Sean Lee. If both can stay healthy, the Cowboys could have one of the NFL’s top 10 defensive units.

I'm glad he's getting his recognition. If he can keep his head on straight and stay healthy, this guy is just straight up monster.

Speaks to the overall weakness and especially inexperience of the DEs on this roster. If Lawrence plays like he did in the Detroit game (fumble aside) more consistently, he is our best DE and should claim Mincey's "spot". Gregory will take some time also, but if at the end of the year Mincey is still a top ten player on this roster, we have some issues. I do not think he's going to be able to do more over the course of a season than he did last year. He gets my vote to Selvie himself out by 2016.

Agreed...solid rotation guy but not one of your "blues".

I definitely would hope that relatively soon, Mincey is what he was in Denver, a limited rotational player who plays fewer snaps. The longer he is our "best" DE, the harder it will be to generate the kind of pressure we need more consistently.

I think he starts early due to Hardy's suspension. But, should Hardy come back after 2-4 games, I think Mincey is a backup behind Hardy and Lawrence as the season progresses. Hopefully, late in the season Gregory shows flashes as well because in that scenario Mincey would be exactly what he was in Denver.

As an aside, I think he will be ranked #10 and Hardy will be #6 or #7 on the Top 10 list. So Mincey will technically be Dallas' 2nd best DE. But...as we know Hardy will serve some time off and that will propel Mincey into the "best" DE role.

Not sure I buy the rankings but it is what it is.
He's entitled to his opinion and the season is a long ways away.

4 or 5 of these guys are likely not to take a snap for Dallas all year, either via injury, trade or release.

This off-season is wayyyyyyy too long.
