One year after he was identified as a player on the verge of a breakthrough by Tony Romo of all people, Tyrone Crawford continues to attract interest from outsiders intrigued by his potential.

The website ProFootballFocus.com recently billed the defensive tackle a “secret superstar.”

And Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett, who is not prone to hyperbole, said that the “sky is the limit” for Crawford.

“He’s one of those players on the team that really kind of sets the pace for everyone,” Garrett gushed. “He’s a great practice player, he plays hard in the games, and I think he’s one of those guys that you point to as a coach and say, ‘Play the way he plays.’”

That’s lofty praise for a 6-4, 285-pound defensive lineman who didn’t record his first sack until his 27th game and has only three to his credit since entering the league as a third-round draft pick in 2012.

But many who have studied his body of work, conducted an honest assessment of his statistics and understand the circumstances he has faced believe the 25-year-old is deserving of it.

“If he puts it together and keeps working at his craft, you could see him being one of the better players at his position in the league,” defensive tackle Nick Hayden said. “I’m excited to see what his future holds.”

Been saying he's a player since the away Atlanta game a few years ago. Quickness, strength and relentless makes him a pretty good player. Great bull rush from the 5. Didn't look at tape from last year but he did well as a 3 just watching the games. Nice player to have around. Maybe he will do better this year. And I wouldn't consider it a breakthru year either. I expected him to do well.

It seems only reasonable to believe there'll be pressure coming from all different directions once the NFL season commences. We now have a considerable number of those who are much more than likely to prove themselves adept at applying pressure within the front seven and that even includes the secondary. The level of talent within those ranks has increased dramatically during the offseason. I expect the Dallas pass rush to increase quite dramatically in its intensity as the coming season gets underway.

He's already entered the "super star" realm in my books after last year.

They really should try to lock him up early. I think he's a future leader on this team.

Yep. I'd rather we lock him up now while he's still relatively unknown instead of wait a year when his contact expires and he's coming off a monster season.

While I agree with this sentiment, there is no incentive for Crawford to re-up early. If he does become the star player many are predicting, he will be able to cash in in a much bigger way next year. If I'm Crawford, I would play out this year on my rookie deal and let the chips fall where they may.

I don't think it matters. If we sign him early and he breaks out and has a monster season, he's going to want to have his contract renegotiated if he's like the average athlete who exceeds his contract expectations.

I look for him to get at least 8 sacks this year... He is going to be disruptive!

He's a player who's over delivered from his first day on the field. I don't care much for the secret superstar nonsense, but he's a good DL and a young player we developed and ought to extend if we can. He's also another guy who was maligned a bit when all he really did was perform for his level of development.

I had a vision following the draft similar to the photo in the OP, where Crawford flushes Manning out of the pocket. And just before Eli heaves the ball deep, there's Gregory. BAM! Eli gets clocked, looks around dazed on the ground, and Randy shakes his finger at him before running back to the rest of the defense.

Nice daydream. Hope it comes true this September and for the rest of Eli's career.

This poor guy is being built up with expectations so high he'll never be able to fulfill them.

I want him to full body slam Eli down to the carpet and break his collar bone like they did to Romo!!!
