SportsDayDFW.com columnist Kevin Sherrington hosted a chat Wednesday to talk all things sports. Here are some of the highlights:
Question: I think this is the Dallas Cowboys "year", what do you think?
Cowboys: Not sure if it's just a year, is it? But I agree, they should be contenders. It'll depend on this: No major injuries to key players such as Romo, Tyron Smith, Dez, Crawford, etc. No more than six-game suspension for Greg Hardy. A rush supplied by Lawrence or Gregory. Byron Jones starting at CB and holding his own. And a running game from the random parts the Cowboys have assembled. Then they have to do all the things right that they did last year. If they get all that, I think it's enough difference to get them in a Super Bowl.
Question: Dallas seems to have a number of under- or un-utilized offensive players like Dunbar, Escobar, Williams, Street, Hanna, etc. While Dez is an elite player, you see the Patriots and Seahawks succeed without a great player. Could Linehan and Romo adapt to a more diverse offense that does not focus so much on Dez if he holds out?
Cowboys: Not all second-tier talents are equal. Of the bunch you mention, last year was on Terrance Williams, not the Cowboys' scheme. He's pretty much conceded as much, and I expect him to be better this year. I didn't see much out of Street last year to make him demand more opportunities. Escobar is utilized around the end zone, which is all he's going to get if he doesn't learn to block better. As for Dunbar, I've long thought that teams should look at guys his size in the slot. Rex Burkhead is getting that opportunity now in Cincinnati. What I don't know is how well Dunbar runs his routes. When a QB is looking for a slot receiver, usually in an emergency, he's got to know exactly where he's going to be.
