The Dallas Cowboys released quarterback Jameill Showers on Saturday morning as they make final cuts, a source said.

The Cowboys have to get their roster down to the 53-man limit by the 3 p.m. Saturday deadline.

The Cowboys would like to bring back Showers to the practice squad if he clears waivers. They remain intrigued by his skill set and his versatility.

The Cowboys didn’t play Showers at quarterback in their preseason finale Thursday against Houston.

Showers did play on special teams, as he had done throughout training camp and the preseason. Showers is an undrafted rookie out of UT-El Paso who once played at Texas A&M.

Can't imagine another team using a spot on their 53 for him, seems a lock for the PS. Just hope we don't waste a spot with Vaughan

I think the most looked at cut will be if they keep Vaughan or not.

I am hoping they keep 6 WR's, keep Jenkins, and trade one of the DL since it seems we are deep there. Get that 6th round pick back. Possibly Bishop.

It's also fairly possible they could retain Vaughn temporarily, until such time as RoMac and Hardy return. I think Showers actually has a better chance than Vaughn to stick around (on the practice squad.) Reportedly, Dallas didn't play Showers in the last preseason game to avoid exposing him to other teams.

He's not NFL material. Not now, not 4 years from now. He's a waste of a roster spot.

He regressed this year. A lot. Last year he showed a little something. Not enough for a roster spot IMO. But this year, no way he should be kept. not even on the PS the more I think about it.

They really need to draft a QB in the top 2 rounds next year. I would even be happy if in the 3rd round.

IMO the only reason they kept Vaughn on the 53 last year , was because
Romo's back was a major question mark. Vaughn just hasn't taken the next step to keep. Although Weeden's not much better.

Don't think I'd see the value in that.

Just to cover all the bases is all . . . the first 4 games should be tough ones in terms of the opposing pass rush. It could also afford Showers a little extra time to get acclimated through practicing with the scout team. Of course, I'm assuming another team might not claim him if he returns to the PS.
