Strong-side story
It's taken Greg Ellis some time to work himself back into the lineup, after he returned to the field as a passing-down specialist in the Rams game three weeks ago.
On Thursday, Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said that Ellis is close to returning to a full-time role and grabbing his spot as starting strong-side outside linebacker back from rookie Anthony Spencer. Ellis isn't so sure he'll be starting, but says he feels better after playing a season-high 27 snaps against the Patriots.
"It’s getting better and better," said Ellis. "They feel like I’m able to take more snaps. Am I able to start? Again, that’s up to Wade and them."
Some might expect this to be a point of contention between Ellis and Spencer, but the two claim they're fine with however the situation shakes out over the next few weeks.
"I feel like I took his position because he got injured and I don’t feel like he should be paying for having an injury," said Spencer. "With us splitting time, it’s going to help me out even more. It really isn’t about me."
Several times, Spencer repeated the words, "Whatever helps the team."
Ellis, though, has been impressed with what Spencer has done to help himself. The veteran has seen a strong work ethic and desire to learn from the rookie, and the film tells Ellis that Spencer's doing the job just fine.
"Regardless of who starts this Sunday or who starts the rest of this season, I think Anthony has done an outstanding job," Ellis. "He came in and had to be thrown in the fire and he handled it really well. He had tough games, tough tackles to go against, he’s done really well."
