The Cowboys held their annual home run derby on Wednesday at Dr Pepper Ballpark in Frisco. The event sponsored by Reliant helped raise $50,000 for the Salvation Army.
After stepping up to the plate for the first time, head coach Jason Garrett and the participating players stopped by to talk with reporters for a few minutes.
Here are 10 highlights from those conversations.
1.) Ezekiel Elliott did not take any swings. He was with the rest of the rookies in the outfield, shagging fly balls. But the fourth overall pick was a popular topic of discussion with the offensive linemen. Pro Bowl left tackle Tyron Smith was the first of the group to share his thoughts on what he's seen from Elliott during offseason work so far.
"He's a good kid," Smith said. "He's willing to come to work and willing to take advice. He's the right type of guy."
2.) Pro Bowl center Travis Frederick had a slightly longer response.
"I think he picks up stuff really quickly, which is what you like to see," Frederick said. "Early on, you see a mistake, but you see less and less throughout time. So, hopefully once we get into OTAs we can start seeing in a team atmosphere, we can see a really good evaluation."
3.) With organized team activities starting up next week, Garrett provided some details of what the Cowboys will be doing.
"Next week will be real football practice," Garrett said. "And we'll be out there going through what looks like a regular practice that we'll have during training camp and the regular season. Obviously different from the fact that we won't have pads on, but we'll structure the practice the same way.
"The last few weeks have been teaching sessions which were much more oriented towards individual stuff where you never go against the defense. The rules don't allow you to do that here in phase two. So you try to work on a lot of individual technique, individual fundamentals, and it's a great time of year for all us to get guys better and get a good foundation under us."
