Tre Newton will always love football. He just won't be playing the game anymore.

A history of concussions has ended the career of Newton, a redshirt sophomore tailback who led Texas in rushing last season.

Newton, the son of former Cowboys Pro Bowl lineman Nate Newton, made the announcement Monday after he and his parents met with doctors Saturday. The physicians outlined the serious effect of concussions.

"After sitting down and talking with them and my parents, what's best for my long-term future is to stop playing," Newton said.

"It's really tough. I love the game of football. It's something I've been involved with ever since I've been born."

His father told him to focus on the facts of his case, not just his current situation.

"I just want to get out there and play," Newton said, "but you have to think about the future because football is going to end one day."

Newton suffered his most recent concussion Nov. 6 at Kansas State. He had suffered multiple concussions dating back to high school, although he did not know an exact number.

Newton was a part of three state titles at Southlake Carroll. As a redshirt freshman last season, he ran for 552 yards and started the BCS title game.

Texas will continue to honor his scholarship. Newton plans to complete a degree in corporate communications, while also helping running backs coach Major Applewhite during practice.

Smart move. I've heard Nate talk about Tre on his radio show and he's really proud of his boy and gave his ex wife all the credit for how well Tre has grown up. Why risk your health? It's just not worth it.
