David Moore was saying the other day on radio that one day he talked to Garrett about not running more. And he said Garrett went through the situations like this, "If you only get a yard or two on first down, then you're looking at 2nd and long" or "If you have second and eight and you get stuffed you're looking at 3rd and long" etc. He said for every hypothetical situation Garrett mentioned, he only talked about the possible negative outcome. For some reason he never assumed that running plays could actually go well.
That mentality right there probably says as much as anything about why we don't run it more.
Well, I would say being negative about having success with a play is either realistic from past experience or is more negative or even shouldn't be negative at all and/or out of proportion to reality. I'd say everyone has a bit of the latter at times.
And I've said for years he has been handcuffed with playcalling esp around the GL and in short yardage situations because the OL couldn't deliver. They have consistently worked on that and we should have a decent OL this year. I still have some reservations about Fred and ZM because they are new. It generally takes 3 years for most OL to begin to show good or better play consistently. I put a graph up along with some data that supports this. That is only part of the equation. Some, more or less, of the playcalling falls squarely on the coaches problems.
Having said that I believe they should have decent success in short yardage/GL situations. This and being a bigger threat running the ball should open up the play book more. It will be more difficult to put some of the blame on the playcalling for this reason and hopefully we can get rid of it completely. And that's a good thing because it will mean teams will have to play us st8 up and we can have better success running the ball as above.
