It's a sad story, but Campbell has a good attitude. He maintains his condition is genetic, which may or may not be true - but Campbell certainly brought some of this on himself. That's evidenced by his quotes about lifting. If he didn't take care of his body while playing, by lifting weights, whatever physical therapy they had available - and he's paying for it now - that's noone's fault but his own. His refusal to build his body's endurance was probably a big reason that his career was so short, and his ignoring the need for therapy after his surgery is probably a big reason he's incapacitated today.
Interesting. I've never thought of it like that.

I've always thought it had much more with his unusually physical running style.

John Brockington also comes to mind.

Not weight trainin was a fairly common thing up through the 70s. It really was only in the last 25 years or so that it became as it is now. The therapy thing hurt as well. Bottom line is, though, that with his running style a lot of the bad stuff was going to happen anyway.

The biggest reason his career was so short is the fact that Carl Mauck was the best offensive lineman he ever had.

He could have lifted weights every day till the cows came home and he was still going to be messed up. Unless your old enough to have actually watched the man's career there is no way to understand how much he used his helmet to run.

He did lower his head a lot and put it right in the chest of the defender he was about to run over. ANd he loved to hit.

I remember Hershel Walker say that he never lifted weights too. Walker said that all he did was 1000 situps and 1000 pushups every day in increments of 100 each...

Anyone else remember that?
