Vikings GM expects Adrian Peterson to return to Minnesota; do Cowboys have a chance?

Adrian Peterson has been talked about as a candidate to come to the Cowboys should they not re-sign DeMarco Murray

But Minnesota general manager Rick Spielman said Wednesday he expects the suspended running back to be back with the Vikings next season, he told the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Vikings owner and president Mark Wilf and chief operating officer Kevin Warren said last week they would welcome Peterson back.

“We expect Adrian Peterson to be part of our football team,’’ Spielman said.

Peterson played one game with the Vikings last season. In September, news surfaced that Peterson whipped his 4-year-old son with a switch — a tree branch stripped of its leaves and twigs — leaving the boy, who lives with his mother in Minnesota but was on a visit to Texas, with bruises and scars for days. A Twin Cities doctor who saw the boy’s injuries contacted authorities. A Texas grand jury indicted him Sept. 12 on a felony charge of injury to a child.

Of course that is what they are going to say right now. He isn't going to restructure and they won't pay him his 15mill to stay.

Not sure I want him anyway. A year at a good price is fine
Very tired of hearing about this which has a very small chance of even being close to a possibility. It is a little ahead on my irritation scale than the Suh nonsense.

Yeah, me too but it produced. It still sells.

In November, the NFL suspended him following Peterson’s no contest plea to a misdemeanor charge of reckless assault. His minimum five-month suspension lasts until at least April 15, provided he fulfills requirements set by Goodell such as complete counseling, therapy and possible community service.

Of course, there is the matter of Peterson’s contract, which may end up being the final hurdle — and it would be a tall one to clear — if Peterson is to resume his career with the Vikings. The 29-year-old is schedule to make $12.75 million in base salary with a salary cap hit of $15.4 million.

Asked if it was realistic to expect Peterson to play on his current deal, Warren declined comment.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported last week: By my count, at least a half-dozen teams have done some background work on Peterson in the event he becomes available, per league sources. Makes sense, too. Both the Seahawks and Patriots have proved that running the football is key to winning championships. There will be a team, maybe even the Dallas Cowboys, that wants to make Peterson the centerpiece of its offensive attack next season. But (to put it in injury terms) Peterson is questionable for Minnesota, probable for somewhere else.

Before the 2014 season began and Peterson's legal troubles surfaced, a stir was caused when the Vikings star running back had a casual conversation with Jerry Jones about possibly finishing his career as a Cowboy. A statement from Peterson, saying he would love to retire as a Viking, soon followed.

Why does he say expects? It the GMs choice. It it was definite he would say he will be on the team.

I think he might think somebody is dumb enough to trade for him.

I have said from the get go Peterson will remain in Minn. They are able to handle his contract and with a young QB in place Peterson helps take the pressure off him so that he is not having to carry the offense.

I'm afraid your right. If anything, he sells tickets and jerseys and MN front office needs something to put cheeks in the seats.

@RapSheet: #Vikings have tried to mend fences, with Rick Spielman and Mike Zimmer reaching out to Peterson. To no avail. He wants a fresh start.

@mortreport: Must read! MT @GoesslingESPN: Talked with Adrian Peterson tonight; he's "still uneasy" about returning to #Vikings: http://t.co/QS0Lqr5XAy

Article explainjng how he feels. If released we look at him. Otherwise we don't trade for him. Period. Too much money and picks we can't waste.

Sounds to me, he wants out of Minnesota and get a fresh start somewhere else.

Peterson said the Vikings' decision to work with the NFL to put him on the commissioner's exempt list last season felt like an "ambush," and he is "not in a good place" with the organization. "I know there are a lot of people in the organization who want me back," he said. "But then again, I know the ones who don't." The Vikings have been piling on the feel goods over the last month, but it appears there are still substantial hurt feelings on Peterson's end. Those hurt feelings should complicate any attempt by the Vikings to alleviate Peterson's $15.4 million cap charge. His future in Minnesota is truly up in the air.

There is definitely some bad blood between the two.

give me fresh legs in backfield. RB is probably the easiest position to replace in draft and this draft is loaded from end of 1st round all the way thru the 2nd round.

Peterson got 21 carriers last year.

Legs are fresh.

I was watching NFLN and they just reported Adrian Peterson doesnt trust the organization. So wether the Vikings want him or not, its still a dicey situation if Peterson doesnt trust the team.

Doesn't matter who is ahead to me. They are both stomping on my last nerve.

I would want out too after the You have the Governor and the Senator speaking out against you saying you should be suspended and how much of a black eye this is for the state and the orginazation. I mean I wouldn't want hear how everyone wants me back now when everything dies down.

the Vikings orginazation are just worried about kissing the butt of whoever is funding the New Stadium they're getting built, So of course they threw Peterson under the bus when this became a huge story.

I saw a specific quote where he said the people in Minnesota attacked him, not the people in Texas. That really stood out to me.

"I have a wife who was able to sit back and see how people in Minnesota said this and said that, how media in Minnesota took the head of the situation with my child, and were digging into things that weren't even relevant. That wasn't people in Texas -- it was people in Minnesota that dug in and brought things out. That impacted me, but most importantly, it impacted the people around me -- my family, my kids. This came from the state I love so much, that I wish to bring a championship to? This is how they treat me when I'm down and out? You kick me? My wife (and I), we've had several conversations about me returning to Minnesota, what the best options are. If I left it up to her, I'd be somewhere else today, and that's with her weighing everything. It's a lot for me to weigh; she understands that. But there are some things that I'm still uneasy about."

This board is going to melt down when Peterson is released by the Vikings and signs with the Texans.
