Ok, the rookies and first-year players are headed home now after the minicamp.
A few thoughts.
1. Felix Jones is listed at 5-10, he looks a little small. How about 5-8? I'm 5-8 and I thought I was taller than Jones. But I liked what I saw from Jones in terms of his movement and pass catching ability. Skip Peete, the running backs coach, loves him. Editor's note: In my senior year of high school, the coaches measured me at 5-8 in my football cleats. So, maybe I'm 5-7 and I've lived my life at 5-8.
2. I wonder how this town would have reacted if Rashard Mendenhall had been drafted and he was hurt on the first day of minicamp.
3. Orlando Scandrick has a bright future. The fifth-round pick had a pretty good two days of minicamp. Probably better than first-round pick Mike Jenkins. But Scandrick is used to playing in zone coverage which gives him a slight edge over Jenkins. Jenkins will play much better. No worries.
4. Tashard Choice will probably make an impact. Choice will play some special teams and don't be surprise if he challenges Alonzo Coleman for the No. 3 running back spot. Coleman by the way told me he's healthy (ankle problems last season) and is back to his old self. Coleman said he can make cuts without any pain and can brust out of his stance much better than last year.
5. Pacman Jones. He's yet to come to the facility and take a physical. When he does, the trade become "official". Talked to Choice about Pac because he watched him play high school football in the ATL.
"Good guy," Choice said of Pac. "Had some problems but he's getting himself a chance to get on track." The defensive coaches are excited about Pacman Jones. But publicly aren't talking about him. Wade Phillips isn't commenting. He shouldn't comment because there are no guarantees Pacman Jones plays in 2008.
6. Richard Bartel. The great thing about Richard Bartel is that he's a local guy (Grapevine and SMU) and he has a strong arm. I was surprised Bartel told me he got up to 260 pounds.last season. He figured the extra weight would help him. But once he realize the lighter you are, at quarterback, the better you are, he decided to lose it. So now he's down to 230. Footwork is better and he feels good about his chances to make the squad.
