Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant returns a punt during special teams drills at training camp on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2015, in Oxnard, Calif. (Smiley N. Pool/The Dallas Morning News)

OXNARD, Calif. – The Dallas Cowboys always attract a national audience, but not usually in training camp to the extent of what took place Tuesday during their fifth practice.

ESPN had 14 TV cameras surrounding the field airing a 90-minute special highlighting the Cowboys’ practice.

Cameras were stationed high above the field in the back of each end zone, two cameras were attached to the mid-field perch used by Jerry Jones and the Cowboys brass to observe practice and a camera was on one of the cross bars of the far goal post.

The multiple cameras created more cable on the tight sidelines, but no incidents occurred.

ESPN even hired an airplane to circle the practice field for aerial shots.

I like Dez as a returner with a short field but the guy is so dang aggressive in breaking tackles I worry for him with players gunning with a 40 yard head start.

Big moments in games and in the playoffs I would let Dez return punts and maybe even kicks depending on how badly we need a big play.

I said this last year as well.

He's magical as a return man and to never go to that in desperate situations just seems way too cautious.

He has such reckless aggression on those returns which I'm sure causes that caution putting him back there but I'd love to see him return punts in big situations.

The only way I would let Dez return punts is in a playoff situation and even then I would have a hard time doing it. He just won't go down even when there is nothing left to gain. We will find a good punt returner it doesn't have to be Dez...

Agreed in the playoffs or in key games where we're down a score, I would insert Dez as a punt returner.

I have no problem with Dez returning punts in key situation if the team feels he is the best player to do so. Yes he is a key member as was Woodson when he played and Deion when he was playing yet both worked on special teams.

A few observations:

1. Beasley and Dunbar returned punts, as well as Dez. I thought the Lucky Whitehead kid was supposed to be the leader in the clubhouse for that.

2. Randy Gregory beat no one. I mean no one. It will be interesting to watch him in the preseason games. Haley said he doesn't listen. Tyron engulfed him, and the backups didn't have any trouble either.

3. Cole Beasley can't be covered. Keep that munchkin healthy.

4. Brandon Weeden holds the ball way too long.

5. That wasn't the audio going out, that was Rod Marinelli dropping f-bombs like rain. ESPN had to bleep him constantly. LOL, man, is he fun to watch, or what? What a great guy to have.

In certain situation I'm fine with dez returning. When you have a team pinned deep is the best chance of a big return. Also key games and obviously playoffs.
My hope is we can find someone to return punts because I don't think Beasley is the answer.
My hope is one of the young wr's can fill that role but punt returning is not something just anyone can do. Huge decisions to be made and huge consequences if you make a mistake.
Everyone talks about the loss of Murray but I've always thought the loss of Harris was a bigger deal. Not just his returns but his coverage and blocking.

Agreed on Gregory. DLaw caught my eye a couple times. He just looks menacing..

Hardy went one on one with Smith a few times and got handled easily.
