"Learning is a really interesting thing to study and one of the things that we always talk about is the importance of writing things down," Garrett explained Wednesday while at the NFL Scouting Combine. "Years ago my understanding is Paul Brown didn't give out playbooks. They made their own playbooks as it went along...

This is a quote from Bill Belichick:

"There is no one in the game that I have more respect for than Paul Brown. His contributions, from the game to the way it's played protective equipment, to playbook--every film breakdown, every meeting. Everything that he did as a coach, 50 years later, everybody is still basically doing the same thing. I really think of him as the father of professional football."

Sounds like he invented the playbook. So he didn't give out something he invented? I am a little confused.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Jason Garrett took an unorthodox approach with players he coached at the Senior Bowl last month.
Instead of giving the group playbooks, Garrett and the Cowboys coaching staff passed out notebooks.

Stanford inside linebacker Blake Martinez revealed this information during a Monday interview on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

"Learning is a really interesting thing to study and one of the things that we always talk about is the importance of writing things down," Garrett explained Wednesday while at the NFL Scouting Combine. "Years ago my understanding is Paul Brown didn't give out playbooks. They made their own playbooks as it went along.

"So we kind of took a little bit of that approach during the week of the Senior Bowl - is bring those guys in and we'll install stuff on the board. We'll ask those guys to follow along in their notebooks, write the stuff down and take the notes necessary to understand what we're asking them to do in all three phases and so that was the approach that we took for the most part and I thought it was good. It was good to be able to see how they could respond to that and learn in that environment."

Garrett and the Cowboys coaching staff worked with the North team for a week in Mobile, Ala. The South won 27-16, but Garrett has raved about the experience on several occasions.

"We got a chance to see those guys in meetings, in that environment," Garrett said. "We got a chance to see them in walk-throughs, at practice, after practice when we're evaluating the tape with them, so you see them in a lot of different settings, and every part of that is an evaluation of the guy. It was a valuable experience for our staff."

This is exactly what I was talking about. He parrots someone elses idea to try and be smart. No ideas of his own. No application. Things he's being a smart guy and over thinking it. Just give them the playbooks and help them get ready for the game.
