Do people forget we have Josh Brent?

Josh Brent? Not that he is an All-Pro or anything, but he has ideal size for a NT (6-2, 320) and has some pro experience. There are really only 3 players in the entire draft with ideal NT size. To be honest, Poe is a little tall for a NT. Not to mention, he put up pathetic numbers in college against second-rate talent. The other 2 players have a 3rd round and 7th round grade. My point is, we have a better option already on the team.

Brent played well as a rookie but then didn't progress last year and then missed a bunch of games.

I hope he gets his career back on track as I thought he had quite a bit of ability in his rookie campaign.

I still see NT as a need soon as Ratliff's production is falling off a cliff. With his size if he loses some explosion upfield he is going to be toast in the middle of this defense and our ILBs are going to get caught up in an avalanche of bodies being driven at them.

I do like Fangrupo in the 4th round with one of our picks if he is still on the board. He has the size, body type and tenacity needed to plug up the middle of a 3-4.

Brent has the size, but not the talent to be a stud NT. If Rat is move from NT to DE, his replacement is currently not on the roster.

Honestly, I'm not sure what to think of Josh Brent, myself. (???)

In August, 2011, Tim MacMahon wrote this blog:
Big Josh Brent wants to be like Jay Ratliff

“When [Josh Brent] comes in the game, there’s [no] drop-off at all,”
said Ratliff, who has played in the last three Pro Bowls. “He just has
a different style. He’s a bigger guy, stronger and just as smart.”

On March 7, 2012, Blogging The Boys put out this blog:
The Cowboys Missing Piece: A Prototypical Nose Tackle?

Author Coty Saxman included info from PFF — big difference between JRat and JBrent as far as graded effectiveness:

Player:........2011 PFF Grade:
Jay Ratliff...................18.6
Josh Brent....................3.9

Eyeball test says Brent's got something on the ball ... to my eye, anyway. Don't see him as our starting NT just yet, though. Not just yet.

Can't imagine what problem people have with Brent. He missed some time last year, but he's been a good player for us and plays an important role.

Brent came in two years ago at the beginning of TC because he was taken in the supplemental draft.

Like everyone else, Brent did not get an offseason last season due to the lockout. He was injured last season as well.

I'm not playing advocate here, but this is Brent's first full offseason in the weight program and will be his first time going through Mini-Camps. This is his first year where he will go into Training Camp knowing the defensive scheme before he steps onto the field. This would be the year where we can make a real judgement on Josh Brent.

I was high on Brent a year ago but he didn't seem to make much of a leap.

Rob Ryan certainly forgot about him. He was clearly passed by Lissemore.

"People" forget about him because his play makes him easy to forget

He was never passed by Lissemore.

Lissemore was our backup NT when Brent got injured. When he came back, in the last Giants game, he was our back up NT once again.

I remember that there were a lot of people predicting a breakout season for Brent last year and it just never really happened.

He looks like a good backup guy though.

This. I still have hope for Brent as a NT. I would love a JJ Watt type of DL on this team and maybe Cox will be that guy. But if not, Rat, Lissemore, Hatcher, Brent, Spears and, maybe, Geathers could be ok. If we don't upgrade DL then we need a LB that can boost the pass rush (Mercilus, Irvin?).

To be honest, I don't think people are necessarily putting Poe in the NT category.

In the 4-3, he's a DT shooting gaps and penetrating.

In the 3-4, I think he's looked at more as a bigger, stronger DE who should have closing speed on the QB...NT would be a nice surprise, but I think most people would feel comfortable with him at DE.

Yup. Same as guys like Lissemore, Butler, and Hatcher. They never do anything.

When I made this thread my purpose was to show that the "true NT" everyone says we need to draft isn't really in this year's draft. Everyone talks about how we need to move Rat to DE and draft a NT with ideal size (6-2, 320 is perfect NT size, and it happens to be Brent's size). Anyway, there are really only 3 guys in the draft that have that kind of size: Poe (who has great size but didn't produce anything in college while playing against second-rate talent), Tamu (who put up decent but not great numbers and has a mid-round grade so he can't be that much of a revelation), and Baptiste (who put up pretty good numbers but has a 7th-round grade so it must be for a reason). If there was a stud NT in the draft I would be all for forgetting about Brent, but there doesn't seem to be. There are great 3-4 DEs but no real NTs with that ideal size everyone is saying we need.

Just because there isn't one with a great grade, doesn't mean there isn't a very good NT in there. What was Tony Romo's grade when he didn't even get drafted? Projections arn't fact.

Well, Poe does have a 1st-round grade but if you've read anything about him he has bust written all over him. Big NTs tend to get drafted earlier than their talent warrants because of their rare size, so if a guy like Baptiste has a 7th-round grade he probably would go undrafted had he been a little smaller or played another position. Tamu is the only guy in the draft with a decent grade who put up decent numbers in college. None of them dominated in college.

In my opinion, Poe would be a waste of a pick unless he dropped to like the 5th or 6th, which would never happen. Tamu is probably the most likely to succeed out of the three but he isn't a sure thing so he would be risky in the 2nd or 3rd round. Baptiste is probably the least risk of the three because if we get him in the 7th and he doesn't pan out it's only a 7th.
