Do The Announcers Really Matter?

I typically listen to the local broadcast, and Babe used to drive me insane talking about placement of QB balls. (no pun intended) As if babe has any clue, he was the worst QB in Cowboy history.

Other than that, I don't pay much attention to them, I know that if we're winning, we'll get all the glory, and if we're losing we'll be trashed. Who cares

Last commentator I enjoyed really listening to was Don Meredith. In large part because he treated the game for what it is fun and entertaining. He never came off as a know it all. Also I always loved how the country boy Dandy Don would pick on Howard.:laugh2:

There are announcers who drive me batty and there are some I really enjoy. I already can't stand the MNF crew. I could listen to Troy Aikman all day, and I like Madden because he has fun. Yeah he says goofy stuff, but so what? Phil Simms is very good IMO.

There will always be sportscasters who just make me want to turn the sound off. Conversely there will always be some who I pay attention to.

Same here, although Phil Simms can get annoying some times. I like Moose the best, then Troy, Madden/Simms next.

At some point I started getting annoyed with Madden as I have gotten more understanding of the game, but the guy sometimes can be real insightful, although thats very seldom now a days. Like sometimes he will point out the naunces of how the OL should align to have a good running game ( he that last year or couple of years ago).

My pet peeve with announcers is something that has been happeining more and more with each season. Talking during live game action. I don't mean when the play-by-play guy says, "Still on his feet," etc., I'm referring to a sustained monologue about a predetermined topic that makes no consideration of what's happening on the field at that moment.

It's like the announcers get together before the game and decide, "OK, what's the show gonna be about?" I always thought the "show" was the game itself, and when an announcer goes on and on in the middle of a play, and it's like the sound is off and you're listening to talk radio, that takes away from the "show" considerably.

The new MNF crew is the perfect example. I know it was only preseason, but when I watched the Cowboys-Saints game, it seemed like the audio was from some other channel. They weren't reacting to the game.

You guys aren't old - hell I remember watching Merideth PLAY.

I was very young so I can't say the memories are clear at all, but I do remember him playing.

Still, it's kind of sad if he is the last announcer you guys enjoyed. He did bring fun to the game, but there have been other good ones.

For sheer professionalism and quality, Al Michaels and Dick Enberg are great. Pat Summerall was very good before he teamed with Madden - after that he started becoming Madden's Yes Man.

I enjoyed Summerall and Brookshire when they used to call the Cowboy games. Do you guys remember that?

As for college football, Keith Jackson was great - a hell of a lot of fun and a total professional to boot. He's lost it now unfortunately, but he's earned some latitude.

I'm actually one of the ones who like Madden. I like him pointing out things no one else even thinks of.

Ocassionally you still get that from Madden, but WAY too often he has to resort to bogus crap and piss poor efforts to entertain and amuse to fill air time. His football mind just isn't as sharp as it was in the begininng.

My brother always turns down the TV during Cowboy games and listens to Brad Sham on the radio as he watches. That may become more difficult this year since I understand Charlie Waters is going to be on the radio with him. I loved Waters when he played, and he knows the game very well and can provide a lot of insight, but frankly he has a hard time spitting out a complete and coherent sentence.

Ditto. Mute the TV and turn on the radio. If the television execs ever get it through their heads that fans crave to know the strategies and intricate details of the game instead of inane banter, maybe I'll change my ways.

Great Thread, I was discussing this with my brother last week. We would pay big $ to have no announcers at all and just hear the players play, hear them on the Field and maybe the announcement by the stadium guy, Thats it. I was wondering if we were the only guys that would want that service, anyone else? let us know. We can start a movement have it on pay-per view or something like that
