Do the Cowboys really have a “home field advantage” at AT&T Stadium?

https://thelandryhat.com/2022/06/14/cowboys-home-field-advantage-stadium/

Long story short, the Cowboys win at home more than the NFL average and the numbers are there to back it up. Per a study from the Washington Post, the NFL has seen home teams hover around a home-field winning percentage of 52%. The Cowboys winning percentage at home over the last five years is 60%. That is a significant jump from the league average.

What about comparatively to the teams they see the most: the Philadelphia Eagles, the Washington Commanders, and the New York Giants? The Cowboys have the best winning percentage at home over the last five years among them as well.

    • Dallas Cowboys: 24-16 (.600)
    • Philadelphia Eagles: 23-16-1 (.575)
    • Washington Commanders: 15-25 (.375)
    • New York Giants: 12-28 (.300)
To be fair, the other NFC East teams haven’t been doing all that well in the last few years, so that certainly factors into these percentages...

Over the past five seasons, Dallas has the second most points scored at home, 29 - as well as the most touchdowns scored as well, 136.

Professional oddsmakers say it’s very minimal

gone are the days where home teams are awarded 3 points for home games ..very few, maybe not any teams these days get 3 points for home field..the average I want to say is 2 ..maybe 2.5..Dallas gets 1 or 1.5..so their home field advantage is minimal at best

Do they play better at home? Yes

Do the home fans impact the game? No

Do the opposing teams feel uncomfortable? Only when the sun is in their eyes

The problem is they can’t answer yes to two of those 3 questions regularly….1 of which (the opposing team feeing uncomfortable) they can never answer yes to.

This means any advantages they have are limited in comparison to other teams that can routinely answer yes to all 3

With a small enough sample size, you can make the stats say whatever you want them to say, @CCBoy. Cherry-picking stats is one of the oldest tricks in the book. :muttley:

Doesn't feel like it.

That's because 60% isn't all that good. Which is why the Cowboys are who they are. A middling to good team.

I don't like league averages because the garbage teams, or tanking teams lose home and away. Skewing the results. Bad teams lose to everyone. Good teams don't beat everyone. This statistic would be better suited for the average to good teams. Where home field might make a difference.

I believe there are only a few NFL teams that have "true" home field advantage.

Green Bay, Kansas City, Minnesota, New England, Buffalo, Seattle, Pittsburgh, and Baltimore.

I believe those 8 teams have real home field advantage, some due to weather, some due to just their rabid fanbase. and some due to both of those reasons.

Years ago it used to make a much bigger difference from what I recall. Hell, I used to put heavy bets based on that alone. I would never do that today if I was still gambling. But yeah, you're right, there are still a few teams that have it. But even still, Green Bay went 8-0 at home last season, yet they lost at home in the playoffs to an inferior team. It wasn't the first time either.

8-1 at home is still REALLY good though lol

No home field advantage because the texas cowboy fans are sellouts who would rather sell their season tickets than go to games.

Maybe Denver also? Or they use to have one, not so sure anymore.

Of course having winning teams helps with this issue as well. The Cowboys 90's SB teams, fans probably said Texas Stadium was a great HFA.
When GB was having some 2-14 seasons, did their HFA go away?

It can go in cycles as teams win or lose. However with many fans from all teams reselling their tickets now as it is much easier to do so. Fans travel well for some teams.
But those teams you mentioned do seem to have more of a HFA on a regular basis. The new stadium for Dallas, is not, as we have seen.

And get some curtains to block the sun glare. At a certain time of day, an awful glare comes through the windows.

On those late Sunday afternoon games, I usually hope it rains or is overcast. It seems to hurt Dallas more than hurts the other teams.
Thanks Jerry. :banghead:

Dallas would have an even higher homefield winning percentage if it wasnt for the cheating refs.
