Jason Garrett says Kyle Orton should have played late in the fourth quarter
The Cowboys trailed the Saints 42-17 with 12:43 left in the game Sunday. Yet, Tony Romo and the first-team offense played two more series after that.
Jason Garrett said, in hindsight, that was a mistake.
"We should have taken him out," Garrett said. "We talked about taking him out. He wanted to stay in. We should have taken him out. ...We should have taken all those guys out, but they all wanted to stay in. 'We're not coming out.' But that was a bad decision by me. We should have taken them out of the game."The Cowboys ran six plays in the fourth quarter, going three-and-out on both their drives. But Romo was sacked twice on the final drive.
Romo was relieved by Kyle Orton in mop-up duty in Week 4 last season as the backup played the final 11 plays -- a touchdown drive on the last series -- of a 34-18 loss to the Bears.
"We're all competitors," Garrett said. "Everybody is a competitor who is out there. Everybody wants to play, and those guys wanted to continue to play. When we put all the factors together, we should have taken them out of the game. They shouldn't have played that last series."

I don't understand what the problem is here....would you rather the starters be willing to leave the game? I would expect any competitor wouldn't want to be pulled no matter what the score was.

Maybe that's just me. I know I damn sure wouldn't want to be pulled out of the game.

Jason never takes full responsibility... "Well, they wanted to play..." Always some lame excuse, followed by implicitly trying to blame somebody else.. Notice how he even used the term "we"... At least Wade said JGs blunder with Tashard Choice was his own fault...

That's not the issue.

A boss who gives his subordinates whatever they want even when it is not in the best interests of the organization, shouldn't be a boss for very much longer.

It doesnt matter what the players want. The head coach needs to take the bull by the horns and make the right decisions. There was no reason for Tony Romo in there getting sacked when the game was clearly over.

That's not the issue.

Whats the issue? That Garrett didn't blow up and force them to get off the field? For what? To prove some point?

That's just silly. If you're an athlete, a competitor, there is no way you're letting them pull you out. You're going to stay in there and take your *** whipping like a man and continuing to try and make plays. That's just how it is.

And by the way, even Jason Garrett admits it was a mistake leaving Romo (and others) in the game. He can make darn good decisions....unfortunately they are always 48-72 hours too late.

Ehh I actually don't have a problem with Romo having pride and not wanting to come out of the game. Probably not the smartest thing, but I'm not sure I want my QB being fine with being taken out the game. Regardless of the score.

Again, that's not the issue.

I hear you...but Romo doesnt have to be fine with the decision. He simply needs to do what the head coach tells him to do. Its not whether these players wanted to continue to play, of course they wanted to play. The point (IMO) is Romo was in there getting sacked and the game was totally out of reach. It made no sense having him in the game and a take charge coach would've told him to have a seat.

Until the QB gets hurt in garbage time then there would be a lot of second guessing for not taking him out......but this isn't about that, it seems like Garrett has little or no authority over his team, that's what I took from his statements or rather indecisiveness.
