Five years ago to the day:

The Cowboys are 7-5 in Head Coach Jason Garrett's rookie season. They are hosting the New York Giants who are 6-6 and losers in the previous 4 consecutive games.

They are on the ropes. A loss and they are practically eliminated. The Cowboys with a win have a clear path to the division title and a playoff berth.

With less than 6 minutes left in the 4th quarter the Cowboys have a commanding 34-22 lead.

5 minutes and 45 seconds later the Cowboys down 3 points. A Cowboys 3 and out is sandwiched between 2 of the most effcient offensive drives in the Giant's season. The Cowboys drive down to the 34 and with only a few seconds left Bailey misses. Cowboys lose.

___________________________________________

Four weeks later, New Year's Day, 2016:

Both teams are now 8-7. It's simple. The winner goes to the playoffs, the loser goes home.

Three of the Cowboy's first four drives are three and out. The fourth is a four and out. Meanwhile the Giants build a 21-0 lead. The Cowboys fight back to 21-14 and there is 10 minutes left in the game. A Cowboys 3 and out is sandwiched between two Giants scoring drives featuring a pass of at least 32 yards.

The Cowboys lose and go home 8-8

The Giants win the game, the division, the playoff berth...and the next 4 consecutive playoff games culminating in their 2nd Super Bowl Championship in 5 years.

January 13, 2008

After enjoying their bye week the Cowboys host a divisional round of the playoffs against the Giants, the wild card victor the previous week.

The Cowboys are 13-3, best record since their Super Bowl years of the early 90's. They have homefield advantage throughout the playoffs, a record 13 Pro Bowlers including 8 on offense.

With over 13 minutes left to play and down 21-17, the Cowboy offense get 3 opportunities to score, thanks to a great Cowboy defense that holds the Giant offense to two straight 3 and out.

However, the offense gains 66 yards and 0 points. The last play is an interception in the Giant endzone.

The Cowboys lose to a division opponent they had defeated twice in the regular season.

The Giants go on to defeat the Packers in OT in the Conference championship and then upset the undefeated Patriots to win the Super Bowl.

________________________________

Today:

If you were to adjust all NFL defense's stats to reflect their performances at 30 minutes per game then the Cowboy defense goes from 5th best against scoring to 8th best.

The Giants go from 9th to 3rd behind only the Seahawks and Patriots. They play longer minutes due to their offensive issues.

If those Giant's offensive issues correct itself against this Cowboy defense and reduces their defense's playing time then it will be a close and typically dangerous matchup.

This Cowboys team needs to send a message that they are different, this is no soft team that knows when to lay down. They need to keep their their foot on the Giant's neck and take away any breathing room. They need to dominate from the kickoff.

A loss may not seem too destructive to the Cowboys but it will invigorate a Giants team that the Cowboys will see again in the playoffs.

It will be a confident Giant team that not only thinks it can beat a Cowboy team in their house on the national stage, in an elimination game....they know they can, because they always have before.

The Cowboys must send a message.

I think they do. but last week they should have put the Vikings away and instead gave the ball back one more time and the Vikings almost tied them. Should of put the game away right there. Can't afford to make those type of mistakes in the playoffs or a very good team will make you pay.

Well, that was depressing.

Maybe, but it has little to do with killer instinct. Wow, an 8 - 8 team lost two games to a division opponent? That doesn't mean you lack killer instinct, it means you aren't good enough to win a lot of games. The only one that could be called similar is the playoff loss to the Giants in 07, and that was all about coaching IMO. Wade was too soft with the team, made changes to the run game just for the playoffs, and basically screwed the pooch. Everyone talks about Romo going to Cabo with Witten, but Wade told the team to go away and take a vacation. A bigger concern is that guys like Crayton went off someplace without media attention, and then came back clearly unprepared to play. In short, the team got fat and happy and it cost them a close game.

Not yet. We had a chance to run up on the skins but we didn't, so they score and made the 4th quarter interesting.

I've always been a proponent of blowing an opponent up...we're just not there YET.

The great ones seperate themselves in December. The Cowboys must win this game and one of the next two against the Bucs and Lions.

In December the Cowboys play the first four of five games against teams whose QB was drafted #1 overall. The last game is against a team whose quarterback was drafted 2nd overall. I hope Dak realizes this. I hope that chip stays on his shoulders all season long.

The Cowboys still have to play against three teams with a top ten defense. They cannot go 1-3 in their remaining games and just slide into the playoffs. They have to wipe their record clean and go 4-0, at least 3-1.

The Cowboys must continue to elevate their game if they expect to take the next step. It starts tonight with a clear repudiation of any Giant's hopes for this season.

We lack a strong, consistent pass rush which is one of the things necessary to have a killer instinct. It's hard to put teams away without a strong pass rush. Our lack of a consistent pass rush kept Washington and Minnesota in the game the past two weeks. We're able to get teams down but it's hard to keep them down if you can't get to the QB.

And missing our best cb in Claiborne doesn't help either.

Having Claiborne out hasn't helped but if you're going to put teams away you have to have a consistent pass rush. It doesn't matter who you have at cornerback if you give QBs all day to throw. A corner can only cover a receiver for so long. All of our championship teams could wreck havoc on the QB.

That's what all the teams lacked before. All those 8-8 seasons they were a 10-12 win team if they had it together.

We all know we need the pass rush. That's obvious.

That's true, but it took two uncharacteristic turnovers for that Vikings game to turn out the way it did. In 11 previous games we didn't really turn the ball over that much; Lucky fumbling and Dak getting strip sacked, I think we had only turned the ball over twice in a game just once previously.

This team has been very good at avoiding turnovers this year. Dak had a spate of about 3 games where he fumbled like 5 times but only lost 2 of them. And of course he only has 2 interceptions on the year.

If we can get back to avoiding turnovers today, this game will go our way.

Dak doesn't play against those QBs, the defense does. And let's be realistic, this defense isn't likely to overwhelm anyone. It's got little to do with instinct and a lot to do with talent. Our DL struggles to win physical battles, and a 6th round rookie is manning one of the CB spots.

So if we're going to win it will likely have to be the offense showing the killer instinct, they're going to have to ram the ball down some team's throats and take over games that way IMO.

One note on Claiborne he has improved a lot this season but he's still not a playmaker and still has the tendency to play not to get beat which causes him to grab at times when he does resulting in PI's. He only has 4 career INT's. We have no playmakers in our secondary which makes a pass rush vital.
