Do we have Jaylon Smith for another year since he didn't play his rookie year?

In another thread we were discussing Randy Gregory and how we have him for another year due to him not playing last year. So my question is do we have Jaylon Smith for another year since he didn't play his rookie year? Or is it that Jaylon was hurt but Gregory was suspended so Gregory's season last year doesn't count but Jaylon's rookie year does.

Can anyone smart than me help me out here. Thanks

It’s been reported that since he was in PUP the first year we should have him for an extra year before he’s unrestricted. But remember he was a 2nd round pick. He also will get extended before that year so that could be moot at some point.

When Jaylon and Randy are RFAs, do we have to worry about teams signing them away and giving up a pick? Would we prefer the pick?

This is his contract per Roto World......

[x]
5/20/2016: Signed a four-year, $6.94 million contract. The deal contains $4.4 million guaranteed, including a $2.92 million signing bonus. 2018: $1.04 million, 2019: $1.33 million, 2020: Free Agent

We have him an extra year I believe.
Nice, my fear is he would pull a McGehee(sp). The RB the Bills drafted in the 1st round and he tore his ACL and sat out his rookie year and then got healthy , got pretty good and then left the Bills.

I don’t think we get Jaylon for an extra year. We didn’t get an extra year for Lee. Jaylon missed time for injuries Gregory was suspended.

JSmith was on the NFI- Non Football Injury list for most the year but he was paid his full salary

He was eventually moved to the IR after they decided to not bring him back for the last few weeks

He is only under contract for one more year..... 2019

Even if he was a RFA for 2020 someone would offer a 1st and new deal that we would have to match anyways so the point is moot

The question is whether or not he is a RFA in 2020. I am not sure. I thought the NFI did not count as service time.

When players are on NFI, the team has the right to not pay their base salaries. However, the Cowboys did pay his salary (and usually something gets worked out between the team and the player). Pretty sure his clock was ticking the whole time and he's a UFA in 2020.

That sucks, I was hoping we could squeeze as much out of that rookie contract as possible. I agree with another poster who said that Jaylon would most likely reward Jerry for believing in him. I can see Jaylon being that kind of guy also.

He is that kind of guy, but he's also smart enough to know he has to earn as much as possible as soon as possible. He knows firsthand how quickly an injury can dramatically affect a players earnings. He's already lost millions because of injury, so I don't see him taking less money to stay in Dallas. I could, however, see him giving Jerry every opportunity to match any offers he receives from other teams.

No. He is an unrestricted free agent after next season.
