Do we have Jaylon Smith for another year since he didn't play his rookie year?

He's listed as a RFA 2020 on overthecap.com, for whatever its worth, and not unrestricted.

He's an RFA after next year and UFA after 2021 (assuming he plays under the RFA tender).

Because he was on NFI his entire first year and paid, his contract accrues as a year (does not toll like Gregory due to suspension) but he did not accrue a season towards his free agency. A player is eligible for UFA after 4 accrued seasons. As a 2nd round pick, he was signed to a 4 year deal, which ordinarily would make him an unrestricted free agent. However, because his first season did not count towards his free agency, he'll only have 3 accrued years through his completed 4 year contract, making him a restricted free agent.

In short, we don't per se have him an extra year, but we do hold his RFA rights, which by and large keeps him here an extra year.

People seem real confident in different answers.

It doesn't seem to matter to me. Does anyone really think Jerry Jones will not sign Jaylon Smith to the next contract? Does anyone really think Jaylon Smith does not want to play for the Cowboys?

No one lets players like Jaylon Smith go to another team. Especially Jerry Jones.

In another thread we were discussing Randy Gregory and how we have him for another year due to him not playing last year. So my question is do we have Jaylon Smith for another year since he didn't play his rookie year? Or is it that Jaylon was hurt but Gregory was suspended so Gregory's season last year doesn't count but Jaylon's rookie year does.

Can anyone smart than me help me out here. Thanks
good question. Smith was on IR, but Gregory was suspended. so I assume if you are suspended (no pay), then that year doesn't count.

Overthecap has Jaylon RFA in 2020. Randy Gregory too.

Here's an article. Jaylon was NFI until he finally played as a rookie, and that does not accrue games toward an accrued season.

That NFI time does not count toward an accrued season is a big deal when evaluating drafting injured players. I argue that as long as you expect the player to fully recover, a medical red shirt rookie season is actually a bonus, letting the player acclimate to the NFL, the team, and the playbook, then getting a full NFL offseason to train, while not using up a year of rights to the player.

An injured rookie delays a year of rights, but the team doesn't lose that year of rights. That's a good deal.

Similarly with Randy and his suspensions. If he had actually trained while suspended, improving his strength, it would have been a good deal. As it was, it was basically a wash, in that we didn't lose any year of rights.

Having a GM who can take the long view on injured players during the draft is an advantage we have, and I think Jerry knows it. He build that sports medicine complex for a reason. Expect him to make use of it.

When players are on NFI, the team has the right to not pay their base salaries. However, the Cowboys did pay his salary (and usually something gets worked out between the team and the player). Pretty sure his clock was ticking the whole time and he's a UFA in 2020.

It has been reported that he will be an RFA in 2020... by the way Joel is a player agent and NFL contract expert (or so his bio from CBS sports says).

I guess they could be wrong but I was always under the assumption similar to what these reports said.

It’s a matter of when not if we have to pay him
He will get paid that is a guarantee

so, if I do the math from the thread, add 2017, carry the two, divide by 6...(erases error, scratches head)

we just need to get him under contract prior to the end of 2019

We just need him to be a Cowboy in his prime and 100% healed. He's scary now and I've read he's still got some healing to do.

I don't think Jerry will let him get to RFA. I think he gets extended well before that. I gotta believe that Jaylon wants to be here and repay the man that took a big gamble on him. He just seems like that kind of guy.

He’s not going anywhere. We love him and he loves us. We’re good here. I’m pretty sure Jaylon has a special bond with the Cowboys with what he went thru and with how they handled his brother also being on the team. Jaylon will be a Cowboys for the next 10 years IMO. Add to the fact that it seems him and LVE love playing together it’s hard to leave that brotherhood.
