In another thread we were discussing Randy Gregory and how we have him for another year due to him not playing last year. So my question is do we have Jaylon Smith for another year since he didn't play his rookie year? Or is it that Jaylon was hurt but Gregory was suspended so Gregory's season last year doesn't count but Jaylon's rookie year does.
Can anyone smart than me help me out here. Thanks
Overthecap has Jaylon RFA in 2020. Randy Gregory too.
Here's an article. Jaylon was NFI until he finally played as a rookie, and that does not accrue games toward an accrued season.
That NFI time does not count toward an accrued season is a big deal when evaluating drafting injured players. I argue that as long as you expect the player to fully recover, a medical red shirt rookie season is actually a bonus, letting the player acclimate to the NFL, the team, and the playbook, then getting a full NFL offseason to train, while not using up a year of rights to the player.
An injured rookie delays a year of rights, but the team doesn't lose that year of rights. That's a good deal.
Similarly with Randy and his suspensions. If he had actually trained while suspended, improving his strength, it would have been a good deal. As it was, it was basically a wash, in that we didn't lose any year of rights.
Having a GM who can take the long view on injured players during the draft is an advantage we have, and I think Jerry knows it. He build that sports medicine complex for a reason. Expect him to make use of it.
