Do we keep 5 OTs?

I "heard" on the talk shows that there is concern Costa is "undersized". I agree he isn't looking "Proctoresque" out there being bullrushed back so far. Didn't know what they meant though, so I'm assuming he possibly hasn't been facing the stronger 1st and 2nd stringers and might need a little more "junk" and "balast" so to speak, as well as a bit of time with Coach Joe in the weight room?

Need to watch him more on my Tivo'd games.

the concern is that his arms are too short.

I don't expect that Coach Joe can help there.

I don't know about injury concerns ... here is a guy who has been healthy for a long time now, got his leg broken and now has some loose bodies in his knee - these aren't the sort of things that scream "injury prone" - his injury in Chicago was a very long time ago

Sorry I disagree the injuries he had in Chicago is why he came to Dallas the fact he missed the 2nd half of last year and is again injured is a concern. I don't think Colombo is going to get cut but I would have no problem keeping an extra OT.

Short arms are good for punching/pushing power. I know they like longer arms for all Oline, but at Center, I'm guessing that is not quite as large a concern.

Most guys at the gym with shorter arms have significantly more power on average than the longer arm guys, BUT in a game, if you need to recover against a guy that is getting past you, without long arms it is hard to push a rusher past or away from QB unless you have awesome feet and/or agility.

Shorter, squatter centres aren't a rarity though compared to other oline positions.

Make him wider and he won't need longer arms hehe.

Costa is no stranger to the weight room, he is a very strong and smart kid (academic all American).

Short arms not much of a problem for a center.

(from dallascowboys.com)

At 6 feet 3 inches, 307 pounds, Costa is a very large man. But he's still extremely athletic. Costa has a 35.5-inch vertical leap and said he can dunk a basketball. He also owns the all-time Terps offensive lineman record in the clean lift with 435 pounds in 2008.

I think they will ride Colombo as long as they can this season but there has to be some concerns given his health issues over the course of his career. So I would not be very surprised to see Dallas hold an extra tackle especially if they feel a guy can play both OT/G

again I agree...it is so hard to judge even for the coaches but colombo's last few games have been kind of stinkers

I'm giving Columbo the benefit of the doubt, although I blame him and Witten (I know, almost sacreligous to do so) for blocking issues against Minni in playoffs last year.

I'm guessing playing with 5 floating/sharp chunks of loose cartilledge in the knee would hamper anyone's ability - to point that the other olinemen had to point it out to coaches.

Columbo has never gotten by on technique or agility per se. He is a mean SOB that brawls and beats up his guy. His attitude is needed out there, as some of the other Oline, particularly the younger guys seem quieter. We need a mean mauler to set an example. He is an onfield leader that gives the team an edge. I think with a rested knee and a bit of work, he'll come back fine. I don't think he's done yet. I think jury should be out until half way through season. 1 playoff game and 2 pre-season games on a painful knee aren't enough evidence after number of years he played pretty darn well for us. He's come back from far worse injury before.

You probably hope that Bright or Young makes it to the practice squad...

In that case, I'm betting that Young sticks. He's a tackle, and those are harder to find than guards - especially when Brewster could probably play guard.

I just don't think this team will cut ties with Barron. Like Holland, he is their insurance policy.

Young is 4 year starter at ND who is having good camp....he wont last 5 minutes on practice squad. You have much better chance getting Bright on there.

We're keeping both Brewster and Kosier.

That's the future right side of our OL.

You meant to say Young instead of Kosier, right?
