Do we need another DE?

Because apparently the Giants have pulled an offer they had on the table for JPP due to his fireworks accident.

And he hadn't signed his franchise tag either.

That was the long-term deal that they had pulled. As far as I know, they haven't pulled the franchise tag yet.

I can't see the Giants pulling the tag. They've got NFI to fall back on if he can't play.

JPP is still in the hospital 36 hours after the incident. Not a good sign I'd think. He probably won't be himself for a while. Assuming this thread isn't a joke... no, we don't need him. :p

We have Hardy as our big money DE with two solid young guys in the wings (Lawrence and Gregory), and veteran guys like Mincey. Not to mention all the red shirts from last year. DE depth isn't an issue

In fact I'd say we are pretty good at DE right now, if not a little bit unproven. But the talent is there.

I just thought of something -- if JPP misses time, does that mean the Giants' most profilic active DE is George Selvie? Maybe they'll try to bring back Osi.

In reviewing the roster and the week one 53, I have a hard time keeping what the team currently has at the position.

FWIW, my question was largely tongue in cheek.

The Giants are now looking for a DE in the worst kind of way. Nobody's going to want to part with their talent to appease them. This makes me feel all gooey inside. I expect them to be scapping up cuts and maybe pulling a guy or two off the street much like we did with our defense last year.

Interesting take... I see talent in guys like Lawrence, Hardy, Mincey, Gregory, Gardner, Crawford (the other one), Ryan Russell... admittedly we haven't really reaped the benefits of this talent yet (Mincey and J. Crawford are really the only ones who played a significant amount of snaps last year), but I think the potential is there for it to be a solid young unit.

They do have that DE they drafted this year, Owa-something Odiggy-something. I thought the Cowboys might take him in the 2nd.

True. But history tells us that draft picks don't have much of an impact their rookie year. JPP is by far their best pass rusher on the team. Not to mention Odighizuwa was a 3rd round pick. Not saying he won't emerge into a quality player one day, but he sure did drop further than he was projected.

So now they have Odiggy the rookie, Jenkins, Selvie, Ayers and a few guys I've never heard of. Doesn't exactly strike fear in the hearts of opposing O-Lines or QBs. They're either gonna have to pull off a trade or go shopping off the discount rack.

I agree with you but it will be a challenge finding room for all of those names. I think Jack Crawford's only chance to stick will be in a hybrid DE/DT role.

Yeah you're right. I think Crawford makes the 53 if we start the season with 5 DEs (Lawrence, Mincey, Gregory, Crawford, [Russel/Gardner]). But I think we might try to sneak either Russell or Gardner on the PS. It might have to be Gardner since Russell was a 5th round pick and that might be attractive to other teams looking to pluck players from practice squads. But then when Hardy comes back, that 5th guy will need to go anyway. Either that or make room elsewhere, but I don't know if we keep 6 DEs. Just don't see them releasing Crawford, I personally don't know much about him but the staff seems to really like him.

That's exactly what I thought. In this age of "Get'em out the door as fast as possible" hospital care, being in there after two days isn't a good sign.

This might be the best group of DE's the Cowboys ever had.
