"We were pretty aggressive on the calls, and they caught us in some blitzes," Phillips said. "We wanted to put some pressure on the quarterback early and they ran the ball."
The Bucs ran for more than 100 yards in the first half. Williams had 77 of those yards. In the second half, he was held to 20.
The difference: Phillips toned down the number of blitzes and left the Cowboys in their base defense.
"They were making plays early," linebacker Bradie James said. "We were moving around, and they were gashing us a little bit. We had to make some adjustments.
"Once we made those adjustments, we played our gaps and made plays. We were able to control the running game."

Do you buy that? I want to say I do, but I'm not entirely sure. Could just be spin.

But if what they said actually is the case, I think we're gonna blow the Giants' doors off on Sunday.

Just thinkin out loud...

I dont know man.I hope. Jacobs is bigger then our LBers lol.

I was gonna do a break down thread of the big runs we gave up, and how they all truly came on blitzes but I'm just lazy right now. But it's absolutely true. Late in the 2nd quarter and early in the 3rd quarter, when we built our lead, we forced 3 straight 3 and outs and it was then we really buckled down on the run with our base D.

Ward took 2 runs for about 10+ yards late in the 3rd and early in the 4th on our base D but that was all we truly gave up from that formation. Ware missed a tackle on one of them and Bradie shot his gap on the same play.

I felt alot better after watching the game again that the mistakes were correctable.

The first long run came on a blitz when Spencer shot upfield. Cadillac had another on our nickel D with safety and LB blitzes that went for the longest gain.

I honestly think we need to FORCE Jacobs to try and bounce runs outside.

And hit him hard in the legs when he does.

Ain't no way Eli can beat us over the top.

I do cause Baltimore had the same problem with KC.

Baltimore gave up 188 total yards. We gave up 400+ nice try though.

No I don't buy it because Ward had the bulk of the carries in the 2nd half and they still were gashing us. I'm pretty sure williams only had 3 carries and tha was due to them just abandoning the run for the majority of the 3rd quarter.

Usually stopping the run is about getting penetration. Versus Tampa got penetration but holes were not filled by LB's. That cant happen this week. Feel good about the Cowboys chances if they can stop the run and make Eli beat them through the air. Not so good if the Giants run for 150 yards. Very simple.

Keith Brooking even said in the locker room interview that guys weren't in the right gaps. (in the dc.com multimedia center)

You realize that Ward has 45 yards on 7 carries, but 22 of those were on one carry. Means we didn't have great run defense in the second half, but outside of one play was basically average.

I don't believe it. I think they hid their hand vs Tampa and I'm expecting them to reveal it vs the Giants.

I think a lot of it came down to just not being used to tackling again. They missed tackles a lot.

What newnation said...

Even in the long run Cadillac had where Sensabaugh caught him before he scores, you can see Hamlin (I think it was) flying in and they just happened to run to the opposite side. Take a DB out of the backfield and it only takes one missed tackle for a big gain.

The good news is, the timing is probably perfect. Now the coaches and players will be on the highest alert to get this thing right before the Giants come to town. I'm still worried about the Giants running on us, because their OL is so strong. But at least now I think we'll be prepared. That and the big crowd should help us.
